I took pics of my dogs with a digital camera, and I tried to post them but I keep getting a message that says the file is too big, what can I do?

Hi Alaska,

Most pictures taken with a digital camera are very large in pixel size. Open them up in a photo editing program (should have come free with the camera) and edit the image size (maximum width 500 pixels roughly about 17cm), also check the dpi value. If it is 72 leave it like that, or up it a bit say 150 which will sharpen the picture a bit. Now resave the file as a jpg, a window will come up and ask what quality - don't save as maximum, I usually save as medium/high. The file size in kb will come down considerably plus the width will be okay.

Hope I've explained this okay but if you still have problems let me know.

Regards
Sue

Digital camera

I have a digital camera too and I get that error a lot but when I crop the picture smaller with the photo editing stuff that came with the camera on my PC it usually makes the file small enough to post..... All my pics on here are done that way and they look fine.... Well my dog helps too cause he is sooooooo cute.... by the way Alaska rocks!!!!

Look under. "Uploading Pictures" post.
A thread was just posted recently by Olly.
Others have posted replies on how to make the files smaller.
It works, as I just posted a picture.
I was having trouble figuring out how to reduce the size also.

For simple minded people like ME

I had a lot of trouble uploading my pictures and I read the instrucitons others gave and still couldn't get it right because of the pixels and stuff. I have program called IRFANVIEW. This is a free program anyone can get by going to Tucows or

This is a small program that does a lot of things and can do them simply or in depth. The thing I use so I can upload pictures to the board is an option under IMAGE that lets you reduce the size of the pictre so easily that even I can do it!

1. I open the file with the picture
2. Under IMAGE click on 'resize/resample'
3. Go down to where it has the pixels
4. Select 800 X 600
5. Then select HALF
6. Then click OK
7. Save the file

I always use a digital camera and by doing these simple steps, which you can copy and paste, even I can upload to the board. If I can do it, believe me YOU can!

I have a zillion graphics programs like Paint Shop Pro, IPhoto, PhotoSuite, etc., and I use them often, but Irfanview is the easiest to reduce the pictures for emailing or uploading when there is a size restriction.
