Boxer Pal
my youngest boxer Toby has been in wars over the last few weeks, having snapped one of his hock ligaments hes been on strict cage rest for weeks now and has been having alot of surgery appointments etc all has been fine up until this morning...im worried sick and have tried looking on the internet for some answers as i cant get through to the surgery as the line is busy. on tues he had another appointment at the surgery to have his dressing changed, there was a lot of sick dogs in the waiting room that day and we were hanging around for about 2 hours waiting to be seen to..i reminded the vet that he is due his booster jab soon and asked if they could just give it him that day while we were there which she said was absolutely fine etc so i signed the consent form for him to be sedated etc and left leaving him in their care. a few hours later i got a phone call to say that he had woken from the sedative and was getting frantic and worried...barking alot and just distraught really. so i said i would come and pick him up as soon as i could...as i have another boxer and a young baby i couldnt just drop everything and go, i had to get someone to come and watch Mollie and my son. when i did arrive at the surgery - everything seemed fine, vet said that his leg was healing well but that there was still abit of movement and that he will be reassesed in two weeks etc

so this morning at 2am Toby started barking in his crate waking the full house up and was just going mad...i went downstairs, got him to chill out and went back to bed. so this morning when i woke up to feed my son etc i goes downstairs to make a bottle and Toby has got diarrhea and has soiled all his bedding in the cage etc and has bust out of the cage without my knowing - gone and got in Mollies bed and vomited everywhere.

first thing i think of is all those sick dogs at the surgery and panic that hes caught something. ive whipped up some boiled rice and mashed boiled eggs and bread for him to see if that might settle his stomach. he wolfed that down and doesnt seem to be feeling out of sorts - hes still energetic inspite of his leg injury and not off his food, hes had a drink of water as well this morning. but i did watch him have a poop in the back yard it was very watery and was like newborn baby poo when theyve got colic - yellow mustardy coloured with a tinge of green. what could be causing this? his vomit was clear and frothy. i have read that if it carries on for more than a day then i should contact my vet - ive looked up parvo and allsorts this morning as i know that there is only a vaccine against type 2. im worrying out of my mind and still trying to get through to the surgery but the line is soo busy its unbelievable.

is it possible that his vaccine has caused these symptoms or the sedative? or could it be anxiety? i would appreciate any info. its just the colour of his stools - freaking me out good style cause normally if either mollie or toby have diarrhea its normal poop colour but just runnier but this is like not far off flourescent.

thankyou for your time.

It's highly doubtful that he has caught anything AND showing symptoms the same day he may have been exposed.
Assuming you knew he was going to be sedated were you told to withhold food prior? That could account for some nausea. Nothing on his tummy mixed with medications to sedate or pain, etc....
Medications to sedate can cause any number of issues including all of the ones you have mentioned. Vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, even hallucinations.
Since he has eaten something without prompting I would just hold out for a while and see how that settles. His surgical site may also be bothering him since they changed the dressing. They may have also cleaned it up a bit in the process. It is more than likely a bit painful. Pain can cause them to be out of sorts as well.
Of course if he gets worse I'd call the vet again but hopefully being home and able to rest and get back into a normal routine while the anesthesia meds get out of his system should have him back to normal soon. I am not a vet but it sounds like it could be related to the sedation, stress, etc...

I agree with Susi (Cami). The panic is probably a reaction to the sedative. The upset tummy and diarrhea can be from the sedative, or from his booster shot, or, and probably more likely, the combination of the two. I too, would hold off a bit before taking him back to the vet since he is eating and drinking. I would not let him near your child for the next 24 hours tho' to make sure all the sedative is out of his system. You don't want him getting all panicky around her and accidently hurting her. I would definitely make the vet aware of what has happened and ask to use a different sedative next time the need should arise.

thanks for your replies, he seems better today...his stools are atill abit soft and he did soil his crate again in the middle of the night and then busted out to go and curl up with mollie in her bed but he seems more relaxed so it probs was down to the sedative or his jabs like you both said. im just going to give him some bland food for the weekend and then reintorduce his kibble just to be safe. thanks again for your time.
