Help! Zoe turned into a Sharpei this morning!

Zoe was fine before she went to bed. Not sure what or how it happened but then this morning.... POOF! We woke up this morning to find Zoe had turned into a Sharpei! It was awful! Her eyes were almost completely shut! Took her to the vet and they gave her a shot of Benadryl and some PRED tablets to take home. They think she was bitten or stung by something. See pictures posted in gallery. She could have gone outside during the night since she has a doggie door. What could have caused this??

Thanks, Sandy

Brody had this happen once. My roommate called me completely frantic while I was at work. The day after the swollen face, my poor baby was covered in hives (I never knew a dog could get hives) and was throwing up everywhere. Back to the vet we went for another shot.

I hope your experience ends with the swelling.

Poor Zoe! I'm was glad to see that she looked much better after her visit to the vet.

I would keep Benedryl on hand in case it happens again.

Oh poor Zoe! She looks pitiful, but I'm glad to see her looking better in the after picture.

Jan - I have started keeping Benedryl at home just in case the dog (or a person) has an allergic reaction to something, but do you know what the right dose would be for a dog? Should I just give him one pill to start with?

This has happened to General 4 times. I give him benedryl and then its off to the vet for a cortizone shot. It is so miserable for the dogs. It could be caused by any number of things. Hopefully this clears up quickly. Now I keep benedryl on hand.

I had the same thing happen to my Tequila. The Vet concluded it was a spider bite in her case. She had it happen several times in her life. Her allergic reaction was so severe she had to have 20mg shots of prednisone every 4 hours for the first 2 days. I keep an emergency supply of Prednisone on hand. Luckily she has not had an episode in 4 years.

She is also allergic to the Rabies Vaccine.

Good Luck...Hope your baby is better.

Oh Sandy, how scary! You must have been terrified. Thank goodness she is better. Our Goliath is allergic to the sting of a red wasp and breaks out in huge hives and looks like an alien dog from parts unknown. The first time it happened I freaked out and told the vet he had been stung hundreds of time as there were hundreds of big lumps!! :p The vet told me to FIRST..calm down (LOL) that what I was describing was hives and if he had been stung hundreds of times he would not be alive...told me to give him the good ol benedryl and sure enough he was fine...I buy a fresh new box every spring and keep it on hand! Sorry this happened to Zoe but I am glad she is better! djk

Zoe did break out with a few hives last night under her chin and one big one on her forehead which was gone by this morning. But other than that she has been fine all day. Thanks for all the advice.....I will make sure I pick up some Benadryl to keep on hand!
