Hello. I am fairly new to boxer world and I've been enjoying myself immensely reading through everyone's posts. I am being forced to fly with my dog (my only non-boxer) and he is too big to go in the cabin with me. We will be flying near the end of September and I am looking for any items that might help keep him cool during his trip, if anyone has any reccomendations. I was thinking of trying to find a "cool mat" to set in his crate and perhaps some sort of toy that he can chew and keep cool on at the same time. I tried to do a search and came up pretty empty-handed.

I am going to take an evening flight so he isn't traveling with the sun. He will be in his crate about a total of 5 hours. Also, any other tips for flying with a dog would be appreciated.

Drs Foster and Smith have a cooling mat on their website that you could put in the crate. I think they also have a bandana and a vest that are supposed to be cooling.

you should ask the airline if the pet storage area is temperature controlled.
Its not going to be very hot at 5000 ft anyways.

It is temperature controlled in the plane, but he is going to have about an hour layover in Dallas. With the temperatures being so high right now in texas, I just want to make sure he is totally comfortable and I am trying my best to fly during the coolest part of the day. The airlines do have a restriction on the temperatures they will fly an animal with, being 84 degrees. I guess I am just an over-worried Mom.

Thanks for the suggestions Roscoe :) , I will look and see what I can get him.

I know the place they keep the animals is not as climate controlled as the cabin where us humans are allowed to sit. I am always tempted to buy a seat for my dog, but I don't know how that would fly.....

There are many things you can get your dog to keep him cool. We are thinking of getting Brutus a cooling bed from Solutions.com but Drs Foster and Smith have it on sale... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=11111&N=2001+113635.

And as mentioned before you can get cooling bandana etc for your dog from Drs Foster and Smith.

They have all kinds of great stuff for dogs and the heat.

Good luck!

When we flew with Daisy, the airline took her out and walked her but then put her back in her crate. She was only out of the airport for a few minutes, so I don't think you should have any problems. But the cooling mat is probably a good idea anyway, just to have.
