I got up at 6:30 am to take Max out. He went pee and poop at 6:30. Then I get myself ready, a half hour, then I get my two and half year old up and get her ready. At this point, I do not crate him, because he is crated all day. So he is allowed to be free for a half hour. I can't keep a complete eye on him because I am helping my toddler and she needs my attention and help. Needless, to say, only half an hour later, he had gone poop on his bed that he lays on near the couch. THis is the second time! I don't get it. He is four months old. How can I do this?

I've learned that often times when puppies are out of sight, they are into trouble ;) Do you have a small area of the house you can confine him to while you are getting ready? Gate him in the kitchen in the mornings, for example, with a super yummy treat. Or, tether him to you so that he can be in on the morning action and you can keep an eye on him. We have a fenced in backyard and our current foster is a puppy--in the mornings I let all the dogs out and begin getting ready, I let them back in and feed them and continue getting ready, then as soon as they are done eating I let them all outside and then finish getting ready. Once I am done, I go let them in. This usually allows them enough time to play and do business outside so that I can ensure that they are done. I find that Logan, our foster, takes 10 times longer outside than my crew. He wants to play and explore before he does his business. Then sometimes he will potty and then play and then need to potty again. He pees several times when I let him out and has to go to a few different locations to poop. I watched him closely for the first few days so I could pick up on his routine and now, I know him too well :p Good luck!

When Maggie was a pup and we were housetraining, she would always poop twice in the mornings. That was before she grew old enough to have better control of her bladder and bowel movements.

I always took her out (also at about 6:00am) and then again 20 minutes later. She'd always poop and pee again and then she was fine while I got breakfast for myself, etc., etc.

Beau was the same way as a small puppy! It took us a few accidents to realize this, but yes, he too needed to poop twice in the mornings before eating. If I were you, I would maybe leave him outside a few minutes longer, take him in for about 15 minutes, then let him out again to see if he goes again. This way you can figure out it he is a "two-timer" also!!:p
