Help with Demodex mange...

We found out on May 28, 2004 that our lovely 8 month old female had demodex mange. Our vet put her on Ivermectin for 3 weeks and then we were to come back for a recheck and skin scraping. Move ahead 3 weeks, it's now 6-18-04 and we visit the vet for the recheck. Upon another skin scraping they said the mites were all dead but to keep her on the Ivermectin for another 19 days, 1cc per day. My question is, Is this medication okay to give for such a long period of time? Is there anything else i could be doing to help her remedy this? The Ivermectin is very expensive around here and i was wondering if their are other alternatives or if this is the best for her. Even with the expense, i still want the best for her. Joe also had demodex mange. I would search this forum for threads on Ivermectin. There have been many discussions about the medication. Most regarding the potential and harmful side effects. I would also search for threads regarding natural remedies to demodex. (i.e. garlic, missing link supplement, raw food). I tried all natural remedies for Joe and nothing worked. As a last resort and only then, I used Ivermectin. He was on it for about a month and a half and it worked. I haven't noticed any side effects and his coat looks good. I can't say if you should continue with the medication but it does seem to be working for your girl.

All dogs have demodex mites; the mange occurs when there is lowered immunity. I would not continue you the ivermectin and concentrate on boosting her immune system. You can search for many helpful threads on this subject.

I agree with Maniago. You need to boost the immune system, more Ivermectin will only make it worse.

Our Bitty Bo was diagnosed with demodectic mange about 2 weeks ago. Our new vet gave us 3 doses of Revolution to be used every other week. She said she does NOT use Mitaban dips and she only uses Ivermectin as a last resort.

She suggested we use a benzoyl peroxide shampoo twice weekly and Vitamin E cream daily on the bald, scabby spots.

I took the Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul & the Missing Link supplement so she could look them over. She had never seen the Chicken Soup and asked where we got it. She was impressed and said that both were EXCELLENT choices. I also add a tsp yogurt or 1 raw egg on alternating days to her food.

The skin is already less red and oozie and her itching/bitching/scratching is down to a bare minimum.
