RamsesMom

Boxer Booster
I don't know why he doesn't like it. I've tried to explain it to him because I wanted to crate Lexus and Ramses..I pulled up all kinds of material on the internet for him to read and he still won't do it. He says he likes the dogs sleeping in the bed with us, but it's gonna have to stop because we have a baby on the way. I bought them pet beds and he is ok with me making them sleep on the beds at night.

Boo

Completely Boxer Crazy
I guess we were incredibly lucky with Jasper. He slept through the night almost from the word go. We didn't have a crate to start with. We sectioned off a part of the bedroom that gave him access to our ensuite (which was well papered!) and he had a little mattress right by my side of the bed. We noticed almost right from the start that he was only using the paper in the morning. So it was a race to wake up before him (about 6am) to get him outside before he peed. I am laughing now remembering running down the hallway with puppy in my arms, puppy-pee running down my legs WISHING our bedroom was closer to the backdoor! He only messed a couple of times. We just had to be careful never to leave a newspaper around. ;)

Like I said, I think we were lucky. But I do think it helped having him so close. Because he wasn't on the bed, if he REALLY had to go, he could go on the paper in the ensuite. Didn't have to wake us up. The few times he did cry, I just dropped my hand down and he licked it till he fell asleep. (of course once he was sick, so that doesn't count)

Kristen, this isn't advice, so don't do what I did. My hubby was also VERY much against crates. He said that it was just the "show dog" people who were promoting it as a good thing. One day Jasper got out from his sectioned off area while I was out. Later he coughed up a googly eye from one of the kids slippers. I went out and bought a crate. Pat (hubby) was not happy, in fact, he didn't talk to me for 2 days. Until he saw Jasper yawn and toddle off into his crate for a sleep all on his own. Now, two months later, he was wondering where we would put the second crate when we get another boxer.

Sophia & the first several months

When we got Sophia in August 1986, my parents made a little place for her in the laundry room. Night after night, she would hurl herself at the door, howling at the top of her little lungs, begging for attention. In the morning when we'd let her out...big surprise, there was puppy poo halfway up the walls and all over the washer and dryer. My dad even brought the chaise lounge in from the patio and slept with er in the laundry room...*bad choice* In the morning, he too was covered in poo.

My mom decided to try putting her bed in their bathroom. From that night on, she slept alll through the night. After about a month, they would tie a leash to their bed, and she would sleep there with no problems.

When we'd leave the house, we put up a baby gate so she'd have the run of the downstairs that had tile in it...until one day we caught her climbing the gate. If I can find a picture, I'll scan it in for you guys to see. It was the most amazing thing to see this four month old boxer at the top of the gate.

Here's hoping that things go smoother, and that you get a little more rest than you're currently getting.

Cheers,
