I am posting this thread in hopes of reaching others that have used Metacam with their boxer. My little boy Monkey, 5 years old, died last night and I am still trying to make sense of it. Has anyone ever heard of a bad reaction to Metacam? I've read lots of info on the web, but am looking to hear about personal experiences with the drug. Monkey was prescribed the medicine in an emergency situation in hopes of reducing a high fever. (105.8) Our vet had used it successfully in reducing a fever for a cat, but overall had limited experience with the drug.
We brought Monkey to the vet's on Monday because of his fever, severe (clear) nasal discharge, sneezing, and labored breathing when sleeping as a result of his sinuses being blocked. Early on it was mentioned that he might have a Tick disease (not Lyme) or Leptospirosis. He tested negative for Lepto and positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever but the counts for that were extremely low, so the vet was thinking this was NOT related to the upper respitory problems. After the metacam administration on Tuesday afternoon, his nasal discharge started to include blood droplets. Blood tests taken on Monday and Tuesday, before the metacam, showed *normal* kidney levels/function and in fact, he was eating and drinking quite healthily. Though his fever went away and he had more zip about him on Wed morning, his kidney levels were through the roof! I was shocked - he actually seemed like he was on the mend, his fever was almost normal. He was administered IV fluids and penacillan to fight an infection (what infection, we're just not sure, perhaps it was a case of pneumonia). By Thursday morning the kidney levels were explosive. He eventually went into kidney/renal/congestive heart failure and asperted from ulcers is his stomach on Wednesday/Thursday night. My dog died a very painful death. I am looking for answers of course, because nothing seems to make sense. Even with leptospirosis he should have had problems with his liver - but that checked out fine. Specialty vets think he perhaps had contracted Lepto even though he tested negative. Has your dog had a bad experience with metacam? Do you know anyone else that might have had a problem? I don't blame anyone for administering this drug. I think it might have been my little boys sensitive system. Any words would be greatly received.
