Help!!! Toilet training

Hi

Al has been really good up until yesterday. He has been going outside when put out but now when we put him outside, he comes back in and "does his business"in the house!!!

When we take him out we use the normal command and we do not play with him (as we have done since day 1) but it seems he is going backwards now. I know he is only 9 weeks old so I am not expecting miracles but anyone got any tips I could use?????

You need to go out WITH him everytime and stand there until he does both. Than praise him. This is also a good time to make sure the stool looks normal and healthy (ie no diarrhea).

In my opinion 9 weeks is to young to be "put out" unsupervised (if that is what you are doing).

Our pup is 5 months and he is never let out unsupervised and probably won't be for the next year. Right now she puts everything in her mouth and there are lots of outside hazards that a young dog can get into (ie bugs, plants other animals, foreign objects etc.)

You really need to go outside with your pup and reward her with a treat when she goes. She obviously does not really understand yet that she is to go outside. It takes time and your pup will finally get it, but probably not for 2 - 3 months. It will take that long before she really understand that the place to relieve herself is outside and that she must hold it if she can't go out.

I agree with all the threads, you do need to go out with them..It can be a long process..but hang in there..Paddy is 6 months and will still do a wee inside the housE IF I dont watch his schedule.he doesnt cry if he needs to go, but cos Ive always been with him I know what times he will need to be let out, Ive always used the same words for him to go too..and this does help! I rarely have any accidents in the house now.Just give him lots of praise when he has done it outside. For a 9 wek old read the puppy section, as they do tend to got to toilet staright after they have woken up, an hour after feeding and I would take paddy out on the hour..It did work .Im sure you will get there

My babies are old hats now but we still go out with them every time rain, night, day and say the words you need to potty until they do..sometimes they play first for a little while but then they go..just be patient...he will learn...

ditto on sticking with a bathroom/outside schedule and remaining with the dog until he goes, praising him lavishly when he does. my 4 mo old pup never soils his crate, but sometimes when he's in the house he'll urinate a little, even if he was just outside and did so not 15 minutes before! i'm finding that i just have to watch him like a hawk when he's free in the house. i limit his access to the room i'm in and another room if i have clear view of him. when he recently began urinating more in the house after coming in, i began also leaving a leash on him so that when i saw him begin to squat to pee, i could quickly get the leash and take him outdoors. i give a slight vocal correction--not really like when i'm discouraging something, but more something just to catch his attention and cause him to pause--and then i take him outside. if i'm moving about and doing work but don't want to crate him, i simply tie his leash to the belt loop of my pants and have him come along with me. does he still urinate in the house? sometimes, yes, when i am not watching him. i figure he's still just a pup and i shouldn't expect his housetraining to be perfect yet. i'm getting better at noticing the signs that he's about to relieve himself, and i'm finding the only time we have an accident is when i have let him wander off and i'm not paying attention. i'm working on getting him to signal when he wants to go out (a bark at the door), but that's in the very early stages yet. good luck, and have lots of patience! I agree with all the above and if you catch him doing it take him to the point where you want to do it.

Thanks for all your advice. I do stay with him but I can stand outside for 30 mins, then as soon as we come over the door, he wee's!!! He is okay with the other end and I can tell when he is about to do something. I know it will all come good in time but I was just wondering if anyone out there had any tips they could share with me!!

He also hates the rain.....picture me standing in the pouring rain(and Scotland has lots of that!!) telling him to be clever....and he is taking shelter under a table LOL. I love him really!!!

Yes, I can picture you in the rain. I have gone out there with an umbrella and try to hold it over her and me. Sometimes she heads for the door leaving me standing there in the rain in my PJ's with the umbrella.

I can just imagine her thinking "Come on Mom - It's raining out! Lets go back to bed."

Hello All

Al is now 13 weeks old and for the past week he has been a great puppy...only a few accidents...I am so proud of him!!!

He sat outside last night and it started to rain....I had to drag him inside...long may that last.

We do reward him with a small something every time he has been "clever" and it seems to be working.

Just though I would share this with you all....tonight is the first time we are taking him out for a walk....can't wait to get home.
