My youngest is also very thin. She was starved as a baby, but gained weight in leaps and bounds after we rescued her. I thought she would never stop growing. But, she did - and she was still very thin. Better than emaciated, but thin. Now, we have had her over a year and she is one year and four months old, but only weighs about 48 pounds - but, she's tall so she looks so skinny! I feel awful about it. She eats exactly the same amount as your doggie - 2 1/2 cups in the morning and the same amount in the evening for a total of 5 cups a day. She won't eat any more than that. No table scraps, though - makes her belly hurt. When we got her spayed, she lost what little extra she had gained and now is back to super skinny. Like you, the vet says she's fine and too thin is way better than too heavy. So, don't feel bad - it's not just you! Here's hoping our babies will grow up to be big healthy-looking boxers!

BooBoo & Riley

Completely Boxer Crazy
After reading everyone's responses, I'm not sure what to think anymore. My BooBoo is 5-1/2 months old and weighs 45 lbs at 21" tall to the shoulder. I just switched him from Innova puppy to adult dog food and I only serve him 2 cups a day total. Maybe almost 3 cups when he was on puppy kibble. I feed him twice a day, in the morning he gets a cup of kibble with some grinded up marrowbone treats mixed in. At dinner time, he gets his second cup of kibble along with carrots, bannanas, apples, gizzards (5 oz), celery, and an egg several times a week. That's all. He is very healthy looking with just a few ribs showing.

Isn't it weird how every boxer is different? I just couldn't imagine feeding him 5-7 cups a day since I was warned that putting on too much weight early on only hurts his bones later on in life.

No problems

I agree with everyone else. Don't worry. Baxter is over a year and just broke the 60 pound mark. When he was between 4 and 8 months, people always made comments at the park that it looked like I didn't feed him because you could see his ribs easily. But-I was feeding him 6 cups of puppy food a day (At least) but he just wouldn't gain weight. I always felt bad and worried that I was overexercising him (we run together every morning). But-my vet said he was fine. Now at a year, he looks great. Everyone who sees him complements his muscle tone and asks what I feed him. So-I think in the first year weight can vary so much and he will eventually even out. If not, as long as he is healthy, it's nothing to worry about. You may just have a petite boxer!

Five cups of what? I have this argument with my husband. I have a 5 month old female I feed her 3 cups of Innova Puppy. Which is more than the bag says to feed her. She goes through stages. One minute she will look good and filled out, she goes up and looks skinny. Just the cycle. All the energy goes to making them go out width wise and then it all goes to going up. and they look skinny. He thinks she should be fat and sassy every minute.

So I would find a food that he likes and stick with it. It appears that you have fed the premium stuff. I really like the Innova. Annie is growing well and is very healthy and shinney. I would feed close to the recommended amount of Innova. If you feed more it gives them the runs and that will cause him to lose weight! I do not feed Annie table scraps as it will loosen her up. I do give her treats like bannas and such.

But if you are feeding 5 - 6 cups of Innova that is way too much. And the extra money you are spending to buy the Innova is running out the back end without receiving the benifit.

Just one thing to say "BREAD" , plain loaf bread, you can get day old bread at a local bakery for nearly nothing. My male goes thru stages when hes kinda skinny looking so thats the answer for me!! Good Luck!

Snoop is 4 months and 1 week old and he weighs around 30 something pounds(two weeks ago Monday the vet weighed him and he weighed 29 pounds) they thought he was too skinny (well one vet did) and the other vet said that "he's probably too busy being a boxer to eat!!" Which is true. He doesn't have a set meal time he just 'free eats" I guess you call it. He is very healthy though. I feed him Iams Puppy Large Breed and I start off the day with 2 cups and if he eats it then I put more in. Some days he eats it all and some days he doesn't. I try to get him to eat but he is just to busy I guess. He does get treats and sometimes when I'm not looking his grandaddy will give him something!!!

Boomer'sPapa

Super Boxer
When I got Boomer, the vet guessed he was 15-20 lbs underweight (52 lbs in August). The rescue folks were feeding him three cups of Science Diet a day (morning and evening). My vet suggested doubling it for a month or so to see how he does. Almost two months later, he finally seemed to be putting on weight, and is now a happy and healthy 65 lbs.

Some days, he looks a lean, depending on what he's doing at the time, but overall, I'm pleased with his weight gain. After I got him, I switched him to Wellness Super5Mix Chicken....the vet then had suggested that I feed Boomer Purina Beneful for a couple of months, and then switch back if I wanted. I'm happy with the Purina line....both Sophia and Dani were raised on Purina products, and although many might not agree with me, Boomer likes it, and he's healthy, so I don't complain.

Cheers,
