I have a 7 mos old male boxer. He weights 43lbs. He looks HORRIBLE. It looks like I never feed him. His ribs and hips stick out. He's been to the vet, is healthy, no worms and the vet didn't seem concerned, but I feel like I'm starving him or some thing. I have fed him just about every top brand dog food on the market(iams, innova, science diet,nutro....etc) and none have done any good. He eats 2 1/2 cups twice a day and table scraps. Is there anything I can supplement with that will put some meat on his bones. He looks emmatiated and I'm sure people problably think he's starved and abused.

HELP!!!!

If the vet said he's healthy, I don't think there's much to worry but if you still want to "fatten" him up, try hamburgers and fries. I read from the rescue site that the foster parents usually give the underweight dogs burgers and fries to help them gainweight.

The amount you are feeding (2.5 cups per day) is probably not enough for a growing puppy. Remember, the feeding guidelines on the bags of dog food are ONLY guidelines. You must adjust for the individual dog(s) needs.

When my puppies were that age, they were eating almost double that per day. (and I was feeding a premium food).

If I were you, I would increase the amounts per feeding you are giving.

Oops....I had a typo!! LOL

I would increase his food amount by 1/2 cup for the AM meal and then again for the PM meal. He might just require more!

I agree with Sabrina. You need to feed more. When Markus was a puppy he ate 4 cups of premium food a day.

Now I just reread your post and I'm not sure whether the 2 1/2 cups is the total for the day or whether he gets a total of 5 cups. Either way you could probably feed a little more.

Keep in mind though that most 7 month old boxers tend to look lean and leggy and sometimes down right skinny. He will probably fill out when he gets a little older. I woudn't worry about it too much, it's better to be a little skinny than overweight.

Your Boxer will put on weight
My female was a little skinny at 7 months so I stopped taking her on walks for a week and feed her most table scraps and she has put the weight back on now plus a little more oopppps.

I am feeding 5 cups total + table food and treats. He won't eat anymore, he ends up throwing it up when he tries to eat anymore than that, I even tryed to feed him a third meal a day,but he would only eat a little. I hope everybody is right and that he will fill out.....I feel like a horrible furbaby mom!!!

Mine is 7 months old and 48 lbs, and short enough not to look skinny at the moment. Yours may just be going through a growth spurt. Mine was skin and bone until about a month ago, and he still doesn't eat as much as 5 cups a day and he is VERY active (plays with other dogs 3-5 days a week for 8 hours each day). So 5 cups a day sounds like it should be enough for yours... So unless it's worms, I would guess it's just a growth spurt. My vet once said that worms can be so easily missed in a stool sample, he would only rule them out if they tested three samples in the same month and all came back negative... Which is a possibitly for my dog's weight gain: even though he tested negative for worms, he was treated for whip worm anyway because it could not be ruled out. He also was neutered and had a food change from dry Nutro to dry Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato with a little of the same canned food. There was a noticable change in his appetite, so I tend to think he just didn't eat enough before. In your case it sounds like your dog is already eating enough, unless worms were missed, or he needs more kibble than my male at the same age... Check the bag, maybe the kibble you feed recommends more?? If not ask about de-worming just in case...my vet said it won't hurt mine if it turns out he didn't need it. Although the reason for mine was recurring bloody diarrhea which may or may not have been food related and could have been a symptom of whip worms. Just a thought if you think he's eating enough but not filling out enough...

I wouldnt worry TOO much, i have a 7 month old boxer female and she weights 36 pounds, and she eats 4 cups of food a day. the vet said that she is bery healthy but she didnt get all the nutrients she needed as a pup so she will only be about 40-45 pounds. AND A RUNT :D

No worries

I agree that it is nothing to worry about. Mia is Eight months and she only weighs 42 lbs, she is also 22 inches tall. She is small and thin. Both of her parents were the same way. If the vet says your baby is healthy, they most likely are.
