I have read through some of the questions and anwers on the forum, but I REALLY need some reassurance. I have started Indie on BARF for the last week or so, and lately her stools have become like water and I noticed a few spots of blood in it. She is still eating and drinking (not been off her food at all) and she still runs away like a idot, so I didnt think she is ill. I have just spoken to a friend of mine who owns two gun dogs and he said not to feed her on RAW chicken has this gives them up set tummys. Who do you think, could it be the chicken? has anyone else had this problem? at the moment she cant sleep throught the night without going three or four times. Nearly crying writing this. oh she is now 9months old.

Given that most raw feeders round the world use raw chicken as the basis of their dog's diets - and they don't usually have loose stools - I think you can safely consign the idea of raw chicken always giving dogs runny stools to the trash ;)

It doesn't make it impossible that it's the cause of your dog's problem. But it is most certainly NOT usual.

Can you explain exactly what you've been feeding? How much, for how long, etc? That would help in respect of making some suggestions.

Thank you for your help,

Well, I have been feeding her for about three weeks now on Raw, I buy her the minced up raw food and added puppy kibble and placed a chicken thigh on top, she gets fed twice a day at the moment, all the same execpt the chicken thigh in the morning. She seems to enjoy the chicken and will eat the lot including the bones, then she started getting a runny bum (the minced raw was fed to her about 4 days before I gave her chicken). I don't think I fed her anymore than I did when she was on tinned food and kibble.

Well, since I stopped feeding her the raw chicken, she is now doing solid stools again. But the solid stools came on too soon therefore I am now thinking it just maybe the process I had been warned about when changing her to raw.

I was mainly worried cos she couldnt hold herself through the night and it appeared to have spots of blood in it. She isn't having them anymore so now I thinking of trying her on raw chicken again to see if she will do the same.

I hope I haven't wasted anyones time, she is my world and this was the only place I could turn too. I didnt want to take her to the vets.

Part of the problem was the mixing of kibble and raw. The two foods digest differently. Mixing them together causes the stomach to become "confused" so to speak. You should NOT mix the two. You can, however, alternate meals. For example kibble and yogurt for breakfast, chicken thighs for lunch, beef for dinner. Hope all is well.

PUMPKIN! Buy a can and make sure it is JUST PUMPKIN in the ingredients..
Try a couple tablespoons full.. My Sequoia will just lap it up.. TaTanka doesn't like it much, but if SHE Is eating it, he will begrudgingly eat it too! lol
My two have ok stools.. but.. when they eat beef, or especially offal (livers etc..) They tend to get loose stools.. So I just automatically give them a big spoonful of pumpkin right in their dish w/ their meat... Usually works good for them.. Helps stop the loose stools!
Hang in there.. It takes patience.. Easier said than done when your getting up 3-4 times a night!
Good Luck!

*EEEEEEEEEEEEEK* I just read this that Gmacleod posted to someone that asked:

"isnt pumpkin used to stop diarrhea?"

Gmacleod posted this reply:
"It is indeed. Pumpkin is one of those wonderfully handy vegetables that can be used to either firm or loosen stools. It all depends on the doseage which effect it will have. 1Tsp will firm, 2+ Tsp will loosen."

Sorry about that.. I've never used it to loosen stools.. My two seem to react to it as firming their stools.. So evidentally I don't give too much?? Anyway, TRUST what Gmacleod says.. She knows... I trust her 110% !!

Karen<~~~~~ THOUGHT she knew what she spoke of!!! *doh*

When I first introduced Rogue to raw I used only the Price Choice pre-packed meals. I started off cooking them (browning them off), then I slowly reduced the cooking. She does fine with the pre-packs.

Then I started introducing chicken, & Rogue could not digest the chicken bone at all, so I tried turkey, & she is doing much better with that.

Rogue doesn't do well with the skins either (they make her gag), so I always remove those. She is also doing well with a whole poussin at the moment.

When they first start out I have learned that it is best to start them with small/soft boned meals, so that their tummies get used to digesting the bone. The bone in the pre-pack meals is grounded, & Rogue has no trouble digesting that.

Make sure that you do feed the raw & kibble separately.

Thank you so much for all your help. Unfortunately she has started with the runny poos again. I gave her pork and it started. I have just been to the beach again this morning with her and she went a few times and in the end it looked like bile with a little bit of blood. I really DO NOT want to stop with the raw as she has sensitive skin and this seems to help a lot (I have also brought some oil type medicine to put in her food, which has also helped a great deal, she had runny poos before I started with the medicine). But the advice about feeding her in the morning with kibble and later with the raw is really helpful and i will definitely do this. I will keep you posted in the next couple of days to see the outcome.

Not sure mixing kibble with raw is a good idea, one or the other is probably best.

What is minced up raw food exactly?

I feed human grade, mainly chicken portions (legs, thighs, rest of chicken), mince (beef & pork), fish, eggs mainly. I doubt its the chicken causing the runs.

The bones etc are always the tastiest part of the chicken for my dogs it would seem.
