We are experiencing this first hand. Ali (our 10 week old) is resorting to peeing on the deck because he doesn't want to go in the rain. Because of the rain, today alone he's peed more times in the house than he did over the past week we've had him. I hope this is just a first time thing and that he grows out of it. I don't think the deck nor our carpet can take any more tinkles!

Same problem here! My poor Bella just sat on the deck looking out, not wanting to budge. She also peed in the kitchen this weekend. But she did manage to go out a few times, pee quickly, then run back. Getting her to stay out there for #2 was a little more difficult. Hopefully, she'll get the hang of it. It was funny watching her run around looking for a spot where it wasn't raining on her- poor thing!

asia was afraid of the rain when she was younger so i would take an umbrella and grab her (in my arms) and set her down on the grass where she could do her business. of course the grass was wet so she didn't like it but as long as i had the umbrella over her so the rain wasn't hitting her head when she was pottying, she was fine. after like two times of doing this, she eventuelly would go out on her own as long as i had the umbrella ready.

luckily, she grew out of this and now she will hesitate to go into the rain without an umbrella but once she gets out there, it's all fun and games (tilting her head back so she can "eat" the rain drops)!

good luck!

Wendel won't poo in the rain

It's Fall in Toronto, and it's raining. It's rained this past summer, but 5 1/2 month old Wendel doesn't like it. Lately, he'll run outside and pee, which I guess is a fairly quick process for the little guy. BUT, poo is another matter altogether! The little buggar will come back in after peeing, and then go off somewhere to poo in the house.

I am at the end of my tether! I go out with him, but he still runs for the door.

I know that you have heard it a thousand times before, but it takes patience, consistency, and praise (and lots of it). You have to go out with your pup each and every time (rain or shine). Watch him like a hawk for a couple of days - if he starts squatting and/or circling, take him out immediately - watch for the cues. I also used little commands (ie do pee, etc) that our dogs quickly picked up on. Hang in there, they eventually learn - Cathy

Our one year old male hated the rain too. We got him @ 3mos old. Potty training was a lot easier. Of the very few accidents we have ever had came when it was raining. We just came to realize that if he would not go outside, we would crate him again, wait for a while and repeat the process. He would get the message and/or have to go so bad that he didn't care what it was doing outside!

I think the number one thing people need to do with young pups is crate and outside, make it a process and they will learn real fast. Simba has only urinated in our house 3 times, and never had a # 2 inside.

Make sure you get a proper pet odour remover that takes away the traces of odour that dogs can smell while all we can smell is pine disinfectant. They will always be attracted to where they have done # 1 or #2 before. If there are any further presents left in the house, deposit them in a convenient spot at the bottom of your garden or even near the back door outside for a few days where you want the #2s done. Also, after a big meal and some running/jogging, it will not be long before nature will kick in. The crate really is a great short cut to house training as well.

Hang in there, and if your pup is still holding it when you come back in, spend the time watching so that there is no opportunity to do # 2s in the house. You will see the sniffing and circling that are the tell tell signs, then grab the pup and rush outside saying the chosen command and give bags of praise and encouragement. With patience and bags of encouragement, YOU WILL SUCCEED :)

Joe hates the rain too. We have to bribe him to go out to do his business (thank God for Rollover!) He won't walk in the rain (umbrella or not). He tries to cower down and drag himself back to the door. OK, I have to accept he's a woosie! Raincoat and booties are next on the list. Right now we just play with him inside and continue encouraging him to try the great wet outdoors!
