Asia's Folks

Boxer Pal
Hello. My wife and I are at our wits ends here with our little Asia. She is not responding well to her crate. While we are at work, she potties all over her crate and makes a huge mess. She lays in the pee and tracks the poop all over the place. I know we are away too long, but we have to pay bills. We both work in school so we leave about 8 and my wife gets home before me by 3 daily. We have had to bathe her almost ever day we have worked. We have next week off. What kinds of things can we do to help her adjust. We leave the radio on for her, but she still makes a mess. I have the crate divided so she doesn't have too much space. I left her enough space to turm around in, like was suggested here. But she doesn't sleep. I know this is separation anxiety, and I know she cannot hold it too long. She is 11 weeks. Please help us. There is no way for anyone to let her out during the day. We leave her a wee-wee pad in her cage in one corner. We are paper training her because she doesn't have all her shots yet. As soon as she has all her shots, we will begin house breaking her. For the most part I would say she is about 90% paper trained. She doesn't use the paper in her crate though. Also, we have her sleeping in our room at night, because we intend to have her sleep in our room always. We really do not know what to do while we are at work. Paying for a puppy sitter or a kennel is out of the question. We cannot afford it. Please help!!!

I really don't know what any of us can do - I'd love to be able to call into your homeand check on Asia while you are at work :(

Are you able to take her out of the crate and put her in a 'Boxer Safe' room while you are away? You can put the crate in the room, with the door open, so she can go in and out - this will at least get the paper away from her sleeping area and may save all the bathing.

The longer you leave house training the harder it will be - especially as she seems to be playing in the pee and poop. Is your yard / neighbourhood not safe for a pup (eg, have you had an outbreak of parvo or similar in your district)?

Have you done a forum search on housetraining and crate training? There are hundreds of threads on this and you should find suggestions from someone who has been in a similar situation with a puppy.

I just read a couple of other posts about Aisa's housebreaking - good grief, what a horrible place she came from! Thank heavens she has a loving family now. You got some good advice in previous threads.

I'd really recommend that you purchase the book 'Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson. The info in there on housetraining etc is outstanding and will really help you out. Poor Asia - she has no clue at all given her background.

Book details are at:
http://www.dogwise.com/ItemDetails.cfm?ID=DTB464

It's listed at $17.95 there - money well worth spending and has info that will really help you out for all the stages of Asia's development. Available at Dogwise, SitStay, Amazon etc, and many vets and training clubs stock it too. May also be in some bookstores.

All the best with this.

I'm sorry to hear of all the troubles you are having with your pup!

I read your other thread about your FIL living upstairs. Can't he take the pup out every couple of hours to relieve herself?

To be honest with you, if she came from a messy environment, you may never have a "clean" pup. I've listened to dog trainers complain a lot about pups they were trying to crate train just didn't care whether or not it messed and layed in it's own crap, because it came from a messy environment as a pup. These dogs were usually bought from a dirty back yard breeder. :( If your breeder was reputable, They would've made sure they started crate training and keeping things clean BEFORE you brought her home. My girl was almost crate trained, and I give my breeder the credit for keeping her in a safe, clean environment and worked on crate training her before she came home.

Also, it is impossible to ask your pup to hold it for longer than a couple of hours. It is not fair to the pup. Your pup has no choice but to mess in her crate. I usually advise those who work all day not to get a pup, but adopt an older dog that is already crate trained and can hold it longer.

I hate to say this, and don't take it wrong, but it is really for the dogs sake, but can you rehome her with someone who can be there during the day to train her? Only if you are unable to do this due to your schedule. A pup just needs someone there to let them out during the day and some time out of the crate. If something can't be worked out, than you should consider rehoming her to someone who is home during the day. I know it's sad, but it is critical that the pup gets outside to relieve herself. Puppies are a LOT of work and it is very important that you get her outside and go potty and on a schedule. That is the only way she will learn. Now is the time. You have to weigh things, and I think training is extremely important at her age. She needs to be getting into the habit of going out at a very young age. It is worth the risk if she is just in your back yard with you. I did it with my girl and she loves her crate and never messes in it.

As far as a schedule goes, you must let them out after each feeding until she messes. At her age she should be fed morning, afternoon and evening. After they eat they usually need to go potty. Also after drinking they need to go out as well. A pup can't hold it very long and you should look for signs like circling and sniffing before they mess. Get her out at that time and praise, praise, praise when she messes where you want her to. Always go outside with her on a leash when she goes potty.

I hope I've helped, I'm trying to be as honest as I can and offer advise. I hope you can get something figured out so the pup can go potty every few hours. If not, something has to change. I just wanted to point out that a pup of that age will not hold it that long in the crate.

I wish you good luck, please let us know how things go, k? :)

First off let me say thank you to everyone who replied to my post. Now let me say that Asia has had 2 great and clean days! We tried something different. I barracaded an area for her with her crate door open and her paper in one corner of the area. Let me say she responded so well. She did not destroy anything. She played with the toys we left for her and used the paper as we have been teaching her. This has gone on for 2 days now. It is better on all of us. When we had our rottie pup. our vet advised us to keep her indoors until she had all her shots. We are going to do the same with Asia. I will go through housebreaking her when she is ready, shots wise. Asia gets to meet her vet tomorrow! I'm sure he's going to tell us the same. She hasn't had any accidents either in 2 days. We are going to go with this plan from now on. So far she has been very trustworthy. I will continue to keep you posted. Thanks again.

I glad that Asia is doing much better. I really recommend the Culture Clash as well. It will really help with your house training and help you understand how your puppy thinks. :)
