Help Please I think my trainer is CRAZY!

Has anyone ever heard of a shock collar or a bite collar? It was suggested I put a shock collar on my dog or an electric fence to keep him from darting. I am not sure this is even humane.

I did get a bite collar to teach him how to walk on the leash otherwise he took me for a walk. I only had to use it on him twice and he learned fast not to tug, but I still felt it was cruel.

There has to be a better way to keep a dog from bolting besides electric shock. I do have a five year old that can't hold him back when she opens the door so teaching him not to bolt is important. There has to be a good way to do this without pain for my furbaby!

It most certainly is not human!!!! Find a new trainer immediately!

I agree 120% with Maniago! Find a new trainer that only pratices positive re-enforcement; if you can't find a new trainer, just don't use her advice and stay away from anything electric or tight that will hurt your baby in any way! Good luck

Thank you for making me no longer feel crazy. They mentioned it to me at class in front of other people and I really got very how do I put this nice "unladylike" with her and told her if I were to shock anyone it sure as the he// wouldn't be my dog.

Some of the other people in my class which is only for larger dogs, no ankle biters allowed, acted like I was nuts because I wouldn't take every effort to keep my dog safe in the house. I have added an extra lock up high that my little one can't reach. Mac is not a pup he is 2 1/2 yrs old, and has been through traing before, this is just a class I thought for fun and socialization. But the bolting thing is new. He is also not neutered yet as my husband didn't want his boy to be ball-less. I made him an appointment on Friday for the week after next because I wanted it done in the first place. I think this will help, but I am afraid he will get hit by a car if he don't quit this crazy bolting thing he does.

I mean this has become a problem since Christmas only.

I agree that's not the correct way to teach a dog. You might try teaching him sit, stay a couple of feet from the door.

an un-nueterd male will be quick to bolt if there is a female in season anywhere in the area that he can smell. Tell your husband to get over it, Dogs have no attachments to thier testicles, geez.
Also work on the sit stay with Mac before you open the door, make it very clear to him the door will not open for him to go out unless he sits and waits for your command.

Out trainer suggested finding one particular spot to teach your dog to sit when you open the door. Such as a chair, dog bed, or a certain rug. We are teaching ours right now that he has to sit in front of the door in a certain spot before we will even open the door. We struggle with this too, but he is getting better. We also learned in our training class to teach the "wait" command. We make Logan wait whenever going through any opening, a door, his crate, a fence, etc. It has really helped. Hope this helps you out

Kudos on making an appointment to get Mac neutered - that will definitely help a lot!!

Also, I would dump the trainer! There are many other positive methods out there to use instead. Good luck - you are doing the right thing

Nuts, cruel, lazy, uneducated - those are the only reasons people "train" their dogs with negative reinforcement!

Daisy's first vet (who was the nicest guy and I've known for years) was "fired" after trying negative reinforcement on her. He was petting her after her check up (she was only 2 or 3 months old at the time) and she jumped on him. Next thing I know he gave her a really hard knee to the chest and knocked her about 3 feet. He said "That's how you teach them not to jump." I said, "That's how you lose my business."

Needless to say I found a new vet.
