Hi I love my boxer (Harley) to death, but my wife does not feel the same way. She constantly is complaining that the dog is too hyper and is afraid of the dog trying to bite the kids. Harley is 6 months old now and is a good dog, she obeys when told to sit, down, paw. I try to walk her frequently and have occasionally taken her to the park to play. My wife's biggest complaint is that Harley will not just lay down or sit down while we watch tv as a family. I guess Harley may have too much energy, so what I am asking is what would be the best way to tire Harley out so that when it is time for us to watch tv she will be so tired that she will just lay there and not run around the house. And what recommendations are there for her bitting or nibbling on the kids. Please any help would be great, I really want my wife to love the dog.

we had the same trouble when Ruby was six months, she was so hyper we never thought she would ever lay down, she was constantly on the kids, chewing at their feet, we were at our wits end, we called in a trainer who told us not only to walk her, but to mentally wear her out by playing, we would play tug of war with her, then get her to leave, sit, stay, after doing this for a while Ruby got to know when play time was, at a certain time in the evening we would play, then put the toys away.
Ruby has just had her first birthday and we are so glad we persevered, she if brilliant now, is great at recall, and we are now taking on another eight week old, (must be mad)
Good Luck

For "quiet" times in the evening when the rest of the family is ready to just chill out you can offer her a variety of different items that she will play with more calmly but still be "active" if that makes sense?

Many chew items (with supervision of course). The favorite at our house are bully sticks. They can't break off a piece and choke on them as they get soft when being chewed on. Remember to remove it when it gets about 3-4 inches long and replace it with a new one. When they get that small (ours start out at 12 inches), they can be swallowed.

Stuffed, frozen Kongs.

Treat balls. A ball that is made of a harder plastic that you fill with pretty much anything that will be able to fall out of the holes. We use Cheerios. They push the ball around and try to get things to fall out of it. My girl who is five still loves her treat ball. She can spend a good 30 minutes rolling it around the house.

There are so many things to do you just have to be creative.

Depending on how you look at it......Boxers pretty much stay and play like puppies till the day they die. Trying to figure out ways to tire them out is your only recourse since their level of energy is quite high. Didn't your wife know this before agreeing to have one???

Pack Dominance

I’ve told about pack dominance. My understanding is if the kids feed the dog it will realize that the kids are higher in the pack then the dog. This may help with the nibbling on the feet.

We had the same issues with Madison until we figured out that taking her out and throwing the tennis ball in the evening fro a half hour to 45 minutes or taking her to the park and letting her run with the other dogs. Playing fetch with a tennis ball was a sure way to get her tired out! I'd invest in a chuck it! That is the best invention, you never have to touch a slobbery tennis ball again!

Does he have any K9 friends? I take Rocky to a local farmers field with my parents Gold Retrievers and let them loose for about an hour. By the time Rocky gets home he's nearly crawling, when he gets inside he passes out in any posoition for the rest of the day : )
