Boxer Pal
Hi,
I have a 11 month old brindle male boxer who has been diagnosed with demadectic mange since he was about 5 months old. Our vet told us it should go away on its own but lately he has developed some patches on his body as well as the back of his neck. He previously had lost the hair on both sides of his face and the skin there had a gray, bumpy appearance. My vet has finally decided to treat Ty with Ivermectin(i think I got this right) and dips weekly. Of course I am concerned as I don't want to hurt my baby. I was reading about the seameal and was wondering if anyone has a similiar situation and can tell me how much sea meal to give daily , how it is given and where I can get it. Any other advice on this skin problem is greatly appreciated.

poor baby.:( the Ivermectin is a good idea since he has had the mange for a while. but if I were you I would hold off on the dips. that seems like to much posion to give him at once. have you tried to boost his imune system with a healthy diet?

Tyson's skin problems

thank you for your reply. Can you suggest a diet for me to try to boost his immune system. I feed him Nutro which was vet recommended. It is a lamb and rice formula.

Nutro is not the best unless you are feeding the Nutro Ultra, so you might want to up the quality of the food a bit. You could also try Missing Link which a lot of people feed. Personally I don't think it is really necessary if you feed a really good food. Vitamin C is good too.

I would avoid the dips at all costs.

Good luck!

I would try the ivermectin before the dips. That's what Bentley's on and after 3 weeks he's starting to grow some hair back on his head. He also has it on his neck and back and down one side of his leg but with the ivermectin it seems be finally getting better! He's my little trooper!

I'd get Tyson on a good kibble and feed him little treats of apple, peach, banana (not grapes, though!!!). You could add some plain yogurt, shredded cheese or cottage cheese to his kibble, too. These could aid in boosting his immune system. There are a couple threads in the feeding forum now about "people" foods you can add to kibble.

Have you thougt about adding Missing Link to Tyson's kibble? It's full of all sorts of good ingredients that will boost the immune system. It's sold at Petsmart, as well as by online places like Drs. Foster & Smith.

You'll beat the mange! Tae had it last summer and it seemed like forever for it to go away, though we started treating it a month after diagnosis (it got worse) with ivermectin. By mid-August, she looked great, though we treated for 8 weeks. She had 6-7 small spots. One place at the base of her tail is still indented b/c the hair didn't fully grow in.
