Need some advice....

Hi All. Thanks again for all the support. Lizzy is doing OK, however she dosen't have an appetite. After anesthesia they said not to feed her until the next day- which was yesterday. I offered her 1/3 her normal amount yesterday morning, and she has eaten hardly any. Cooked her up her favorite chicken/rice/gravy and she'll lick it, but won't eat. She's visibly lost weight, and I'm concerned because although she acts OK, I need to get some nutrition in her. I tried several canned foods, nothing, almost ready to puree a milkshake and force. Hoping I can get her to eat by herself.

Anyone know of something she may eat, or something that may be easier on her to eat....chewing with a sore throat may be a factor here. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Lizzy sends plenty of kidney beans and nubby-wags to everyone!!!

Have you tried warm milk. I know it is not good for them, but I know when my Sandy doesn't feel like eating, I will heat a little milk, add a little water and she will usually drink it up. Just be sure and water it down.
I have also tried yogurt and popsicles.

Good Luck!
Debbie

How about Hills SD A/D? It's a rich liver pate sold at the vets office for both cats and dogs. It comes in a can the size of a tuna can. Smells just like liver and both cats and dogs love it. I've fed it before to ailing cats in a food syringe. Once they get a bit of food in theiir tummy, they do seem to regain appetite. Forced feeding is kinda like "priming the pump".

Hope Lizzy eats soon.

When Sadie was sick my vet recommended chicken broth and pasta and she ate it right up, you might want to try that??

Lots of good boxer vibes and prayers to you and Lizzy!!

I just caught onto this thread and I am so sorry for all that you are going through with Miss Lizzy. Please know you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Try some chicken liver, bake until cooked through and have at it! I have never seen a pup turn down chicken liver! I hope she eats something!

Colleen- thanks for the idea! I did think of Ensure, as a last resort force-feeding option, but I decided to try having her drink it to get something in her stomach so I could give her her meds. Got some, and she readily tried to drink it, making a mess all over the place.
Her saliva has been very strangely thick, like molasses. Very weird. She drinks her water and the thick saliva "contaminates" her water, and turns it into a thick, stringy mass of water- almost 1 gallon ruined! When I pour it into the sink it pours out thick, and heavy, and the water looks very soapy- like I put detergent in it! I've had to change it 3 times tonight! Very strange. I thought dehydration but she's been drinking.
I did discover one thing I believe is affecting her appetite.....her lower jaw. She's been looking at me with an "open mouth" since she got home from the biopsy. She looks funny! I thought it was so she could breath easier, however tonight I notice that she NEVER closes it. My heart jumped at the thought of the vet hitting a nerve/tendon that paralized her jaw, but I really just thinks it is so sore, she just can't chew anything. Nothing. She won't move it, but dosen't display pain if I move it. So, I'm gonna try to get some pain meds for her and keep the diet smooth and easy to get down.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions....they all sound like something worth trying, and I think Lizzy may then play me a fool for gourmet home cooked food all the time! Just like since I've been letting her sleep on my bed she now thinks she has permission for the couch! Just looks at me like "what?" when I walk in and she's drooling on my sofa....she knows she can get away with anything now!
Thanks for ALL the boxer vibes. You guys have made this much easier for me, and definately Lizzy. Kidney beans and supersonic nubby-wags are still going strong, and she's sending them to all of you- :)

Mike, her mouth is probably sore like ours is after a long dentist appt. which makes it hard to eat, I just thought that ensure or boost because she can lap and its full of vitamins etc, maybe it could help to get something in her stomach, maybe your vet may have some ideas too worth a call.
