Help! I'm allergic to Jersey

We've had Jersey for almost two years now. About 6 months after we got her, my husband and myself and one of my children developed an allergy to her. if her saliva touches our skin we get a horrible raised, itchy rash. She shakes herself (like they do after they get wet or after you pet them or brush them) constantly. She's always rolling around on the floor on her back (as if she is scratching it) and we are constantly sneezing and have clogged sinuses. I'm sure it's from her, because when we are away from her, we feel okay. We don't want to give her up, but I don't know what to do. We tried taking claritin on a daily basis, hasn't really helped. We tryed Zyrtec. Hasn't really helped. I am now using Nasonex nasal spray. No relief so far.

Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem?

You say that one of your kids, obviously you have others that are not affected, have tests been done to determine if it is the saliva ?

I am just curious, I am sure that somebody here can offer you advice.

Well, it's not just the saliva. We are just allergic to her in general. Her dander, I guess. And no, we haven't had tests done, but there is no doubt that we are allergic to her.

I am assuming you are allergic to her dander too since you mentioned about her rolling all over the floor and shaking, spreading the dander about? Do you use air cleaners? Stephen (my fiance) is allergic to animals but we have both dogs inside and various cats that come and go (strays). We have air cleaners running constantly and I use febreze allergen reducer spray. Some say the febreze spay doesn't work but I notice a difference in stephen when I don't use it. He also takes claritin. AFter you touch her, wash your hands and if the saliva gets on you, wash it off. I also vacuum a lot, especially in the areas the dogs are at a lot and the areas where stephen sits and lays. Surprising that you, your husband, and one child are all allergic but I suppose it is possible. Actually if it is the dog is is not really the dog or the hair. Allergies to pets are generally caused by the pet dander. When you are away from her does that mean out of the house. could it be somethig in the house. What about outside with her?

Do you put any products on her ( ie shampoo flea/tick products, scents) that might be the cause?

They do sell special shampoos to help lessen the pet dander.

Replace the filter with an allergy filter on your furnace to help clean the air in the house.

I have heard about the Febreze Alergin spray as well, as my daughter and myself have a very bad allergic reaction to pollen and we are surrounded by pine trees, I have been looking to buy this. It is not on the market in Spain yet so I can´t say that I have used it. It may be worth a try.

There is a product called Allerpet-D that you may want to try. You rub it into their coat and it helps with dander allergies. They make shampoos as well as wipes and rub-in solutions. They seem to work pretty well.

I had a friend who was highly allergic to cats and also had asthma and she fell in love with this stray cat and adopted it and used the feline version (Allerpet-C) and it worked great for her, so perhaps its worth a try?

wow im so sorry, I was allergic to my Samoyed (who later passed away in a fire) may 31,05. The doc told me there was no choice I had to get rid of her... Well I didnt cuz she was my baby as they all are NOW. I just put her crate in another room as she slept in my room before. Dogs will be dogs and they will roll and have fun (which causes you discomfort) so I don't know what to tell you. But i went through the same thing and my daughter was allergic to her too. we just did not allow her to sleep with us or lay with us or on furniture (which we get to allow our boxers to do). If zertec did not help I am not sure if medications are going to do so. But my thoughts are with you and your family, good luck

My oldest son was allergic to dogs so for 10 years, we had none. He was allergic to the hair, the dander, and the saliva. We found out last year it was long haired dogs that were the worst for him. He has Asthma and gets very weezy. We put him on Singulair chewable tablets, Nasonex and he takes 2 different inhalers everyday. I call it his quadruple cocktail! We went on vacation last summer and stayed with family that had 5 indoor dogs some long hair some short, He had no problems at all. So at X-mas we got Dozer, no problems so last month we got Diesel too! I have a baby gate to his room so it is doggie free and he knows his meds are for life. I would suggest talking it over with your doctor and try all the medications out there. Do a online search for dog allergies too, you may find a list of meds to ask your Dr. about. I also give mine a good brushing then a bath every week to cut down on the dander and hair. Also when we got Diesel we invested in a high powered hepa filter vacuum, we also have air purifiers Good luck.

We used the Allerpet-D also because our son has allergies. He was tested a few years ago and he is more allergic to cats than dogs though. Anyways, when we got Leesha, we got the Allerpet and bought a bagless vacuum cleaner with a Hepa filter. I had to vacuum alot and we also kept her out of my sons room (this was very hard but she was a good girl about it). He learnt to wash his hands as soon as he was done petting or playing with her and everything worked well. We also took the carpets out of his room and put laminated flooring down, which helped a great deal.

There are still some people that no matter what you do have very severe allergic reactions (my brother-in-law is one of them) but try some of the suggestions and see what happens. The Allerpet was great for us and my hubby would put it on her once a week with no problems to her.
