I think the answer is that you were probably ignoring her. Her whining wasn't getting her anywhere, so she went to sleep.
Be aware of how you react to her crying. If she's getting what she wants (attention or whatever), she'll keep doing it. If you ignore it and don't acknowledge it, she'll eventually learn to stop.
Of course, I'm not saying ignore her all the time--just when it's bed time and time for her to sleep and be quiet.
Good luck! The first few days are so hard.
