we have a 5 mth old female fawn boxer. I lover her to death I'm home all day with her until i have to leave to pick up the kids. We had her in the crate when we left and she was doing great until she figueredhow to pop the side open and squeeze her way out. Wel that time she hurt herself took her to the vet and they gave her meds she didn't break anything. The second time (2 days) later we put her in the crate this time she gets out again and fractures her pelvic bone. This has been one nightmare after another. Well now we decide to put the crate up and put a baby gate in our master bath and put her in there.. She was doing great until tonight when she figuered out how to climd the gate to get out.. So my question is what do i do with her now i can't leave her out she will chew everything (and it's a new house)!! I thought about putting her in doggy daycare... Does any one have suggestions!!!!

new home, new pup.....

How old is the crate? Does it have double locks? Is it to small or a whimpy style of crate? Even though she is only 5 months old, she is very strong, and will get 5 times stronger before she is grown. A sturdy dog needs a sturdy crate, with good locks, and plenty of ventalation. You may want to check into a different crate. If you feel I am at error and the crate is fine, then yes you need a dog sitter or doggy day care as I fully know a puppy can and will destroy almost everything.

Better crate

I hear you, we tried to put or three month old boxer locked in the kitchen for awhile with two baby gates up and that didnt work at all he got over both and was free in the house. The best thing I have found is to put him the crate when we leave. Mine only has one door which is hard for me to shut so I know he cant get out..mabye look at someway to alter yours to shut better or look at getting a new one that is safer ..hope this helps

How far is your trip to get the kids and how long are you gone? Perhaps she would like to ride along?
Maybe you could try a laundry room or bathroom, an area that you can puppy proof pretty easily/quickly until she is a little older and more trustworthy.
You could also try putting something in front of the door of the crate when you leave...

5mth old locked up

the crate is brand new we got a big one its black metal with all the right ventalation in it she just figuered a way to get out .. What she did is pop the side where the top meets the corner side she popped that open and wiggled her way out.We put a camera in the room and watched her do it it's amazing. And with the gate on the bathroom she climbs her way up by sticking her toes in the little holes and climbing out. She is amazing other than her being the great houdini she is a awesome dog. I plan on going back to work in the next couple of weeks but i think daycre is going to be her only option without causing herself damage.

Duke also figured out how to open his cage, it was back metal with metal clips. Hard to exlain, but it fell apart easily. We bought it at Walmart for maybe $60.00, here is an example:

We bought a new heavy duty metal one that had poles that holds the sides together. He is unable to break out of this one. We bought this one at a small local pet store. I think it cost about $120.00. This one is very sturdy. This one is like the new one:

It says "drop pin" crates, this may be what you need instead of the other one that clips together.

I take Duke to daycare once or twice a week, when I have something to do at night. I think he would get to worn down if he went everyday. He loves it!

daycamp

I vote for daycamp. I've read too many stories of dogs who can break out of their crates being seriously injured. Buster, a rescue, goes to daycamp and he LOVES it. If you can afford it and you have a place you trust, it's a great thing for the dog.

The one we take Buster to has lots of play time and lots of "counselors" :) so it's a good one.

Good luck with Houdini!

Kennel suggestion

I have had many fosters that have been able to break out of their crates. There are a few that will work to keep them in. One is PetZazz Enduro Heavy Duty Wire Home and the other is a six way locking plastic crate. Sorry that I do not remeber the name of the second but the lock on the front locks sideways as well as up an down with a twist nob that they can not undo. Both of these should be able to be found at your local pet store. Also I suggest getting a special toy or treat that they only get when in their kennel. That way the kennel is not such a bad thing to them.

We have a 4 month old female and we built an enclosure in a spare room for her and at 2 months could already climb over the grates that we bought. So that worked for 2 weeks...
Now - we kennel her during the day w/ a heavy-duty plastic crate w/ the twist locks and she can't get out.
However - we only kennel her when we leave and lately has been pottying in her kennel. We are working on that issue and have been giving her new "fun" toys so she's improving day by day.
But definitely a new crate or a puppy-proof room!

I just wanted to ad something about using a crate. We got one of our boxers from a friend who could not look after her anymore and she spent 3 years of her life pretty well in a large crate she is know 4 yrs old and the vet says she has problems with her back due to being crated they say she has the back of an old dog. My two boxers run loose throught the house and will not bother a thing they have lots of toys to get into I fully trust them. If I get anything new say a candle and such I show both of them and let them look at it for a while before I put it where I want and they will not bother it. Our youngest boxer is so nosey she has to see everything.
