HELP..He's eating the couch

[Busters Mom]

Buster eats the couch and chairs while we are home. I caught him just the other night knawing on the now exposed wood framing to the chairs. Of course Buster will eat anything...paper towels, toilet paper, cottan swabs, my son's skateboards. For some reason he has a extreme liking to paper and wood. I had to take away a pencil from him just an hour ago. He will tear it to tiny pieces and its not easy getting the pieces of pencil out of the carpet.

I am hoping that the chewing will go away so! He has treats and babies so it's not like he doesn't have things to chew on.

He's just so darn cute it's hard to get mad at him and I'm sure he's a human because he knows I won't stay mad long!

My Buster did the same thing. He ate a couch, chair, coffee table...for starters. He has grown out of it now. He is able to run free in the house all day...no more crate. During the training of going from the crate to being free he did eat the carpet and nibbled on "his chair" (i guess he was telling us it was his!) Now all we have to do it watch the electronics like cell phones and remotes, if you leave them he will eat them!

Rock and Buster be good boys, if you eat the couch you can't sleep on it silly boys!

B-mans mom-- Rock has eaten the electrical cord on my daughters lamp and he did eat the phone cord. I totally forgot about that until you mentioned it. He did stop that though. He moved on to bigger and better things....THE COUCH!!!!!

Hana--I am so glad that I am not alone in this. I know it is a terrible thing but I have to laugh at the way you described your situation. I can totally see Buster and Rock at opposite ends of the same couch going to town. They sound alot alike. Rock will eat anything...bitter, sweet, hot or cold. He actually eats onions and tomatos if he can get my hubby to give it to him. Anyway as you hear of solutions let me know and I will do the same. MeganMK--Would not the vinegar smell? It might work because it is a foul taste but I worry about an odor.

Oh I feel for you,Dozer liked bitter apple spray too. The vinegar odor doesn't last. I had to end up using a splash of hot sauce. He left the couch alone !!
FYI- don't let Rock eat the onions-they are toxic to our furbabies,tomatoes good & yummy.

We have gone through several cell phone...remotes and things of that nature but no electrical cords...maybe he likes the tingling feeling...Rock you silly boy!


As far as likeing bitter apple, we never tried that.

We did try cyanne (spelling) pepper, vinager, lemon, line (suggested by trainer) and he liked all of those....he would make a face like UGH...then come back for some more....silly thing!

I had NO idea about the onion thing. I will definitely keep that in mind. He has only eaten onion a couple of times but he definitely WON'T be eating it anymore. But by toxic do you mean that they could kill him? Just curious...not that it matters because the matter has been decided. I will try the hot sauce and the vinegar on the furniture. Thanks for the heads up

Titan likes the bitter apple too. I had to spray it on the x-mas tree last year because he kept eating the ornaments. After I sprayed the tree he would come lick the branches then take a bite out of the tree branches--I about died when I saw him do this, and then of course when I got onto him for eating the tree and said the evil "no" word he would bite an ornament off--so we never got anywhere with that :rolleyes: All I can think of is to watch the dog all the time and soon as he gets to the couch trying to eat it correct him and catch him before he bites it. IF nothing else you might have to revoke his privileges of sitting on the couch- then he has no reason to be near it in the first place. Or you could try one of those slipcovers, dont they cover a couch??
Personally I wouldn't suggest spanking the dog like suggested in another post, that will just start a whole nother mess you dont want to start with. It's a dog who will learn from positive reinforcement like "no, aahh" and other basic commands.
