In a way, my boyfriend wants to breed them. Since the day he got Dom he has said he wanted one of his offspring...a Little Dom, so to speak. I guess he thinks that in the litter there will be one dog that looks and acts exactly like Dom. He is a LICKER!! WHY he would want to possibly continue that trait, I don't know. The dog's tongue is constantly licking something...air, your hand, your foot, the air in front of you...everything! But he told me it was my decision and it was up to me. He's had offers from other people with females needing a male but he turned them down thinking we would breed him with Lilly. In a way, I think he's disappointed...but he knows I'm always right and will do what I want :)

Oh yeah, and I just sent an e-mail to monster-in-law with a few pictures of pups in rescue right now. I told her that if anyone she works with wants a pup now, here are a few who need homes. I mean, really, even if I did breed Lilly (which i'm not) the people would have to wait AT LEAST a year or more to even get a pup, and that's assuming she'd have enough for everyone who wants one...which in itself is impossible. Oh well.

You do not need to explain a thing to them. They should respect your decision, period.

It is unreasonable for them to try to make you feel guilty for doing what you believe to be in the best interest of you and your pup.

I'll bet that were you to eventually breed your dog, and there were expensive complications, they wouldn't show up to help with the expenses.

Your responsibility in this case is to you and your pup, not those who had hoped to get a pup from you. Of course they'd probably expect a bargain price from a "friend".

Shotze's Mom

A few good reasons are:
increased chance of mammory tumors
unsightly saggy boobs with large nipples post puppies
unsightly enlarged vulva post-puppies
possible risks: death, false pregnancy, loss of puppies, abortion, hand raising pups, milk fever in Mom, abnormalities (if bred to early) in puppies, also, if bred to early you take a chance of the bitch not knowing how to care for the pups and laying on them, also there is a risk with every litter of a stuck pup that would need emergency surgery to remove....

I could go ON and ON but, I feel those reasons and reason enough to not breed. If she is in such deperate need of pups...tell her to get her own dog...one thats pure bred and show quality, this one is yours and YOU should do as YOU see fit for her. I thought about breeding Shotze when I first got her, but wouldnt do it now for anything. I wasnt interested in money...I was interested in giving my Mom one and my brother and a few other people. Besides the fact that she has demodex...I dont want to put my baby through labor and delivery and then give her babies away. I couldnt do it. Id have to keep them all.

PLEASE stick to your guns and do what you think is right for your baby.

My reason for not breeding is because my husband won't let me keep all the babies! I wouldn't be able to give them up - no matter how much money someone offered to pay me.

You are doing the right thing by having her spayed.
All I would say is, "she is MY dog, I WILL have her spayed if I want to and I DO NOT need to explain ANYTHING to you!" nuf said!
NO MATTER what you may say though... I can assure you they all won't understand. So, I can't tell you what to say to help them change their minds and leave you alone. They'll be better about it maybe after she is fixed, cuz what are they gonna nag you about then!... there's no going back.
Suggesting rescue is a great idea, many many cute boxer pups and adults in need of homes. Why add to it?!

"Lilly is counting on me, as her guardian, to make the best possible choices for her. I am honoring my commitment to her and not breeding her." End of discussion.

VTbxrFan is exactly right and Kuddos for sending you MIL (monster-in-law LOL!!!) pics of rescues. Make that appointment to get the spay done and dont worry what anybody says to you --- you know you made the right decision for you and your baby.

If you want them to understand I`ll be glad to send you some pics of starved rescue Boxers just to show what happens to them after they turn two years old and are not wanted anymore by those people that said "Oh! I`ve always wanted a boxer". Maybe they should try devoting themselves to helping the rescues for just a few months to see how much they can take. Maybe you could show them a few sites of just how many Boxers are looking for forever homes (that aren`t puppies anymore).

Not saying that you wouldn`t find the best of homes as possible for them. I admire the love you have for your girl!!! BUT I have been there too many times that I often say now, (No offense, I just say this out of frustration) why should I breed dogs when I can sell my infant skin child for $25.000. That usually shuts them up!

OH MY GOD!!! You are 100% totally right, not that I know allot about Boxer's or even breeding. My Boxer Riley is my dream dog I always said I would get one and I did!! He is my "BABY" He also is 6 months old and people also asked me if I was going to breed him I actually had a friend that said she would buy one just to breed with Riley. I said no way. First of all it is a big responsabilty and my guy is stud. I just know nothing about them to breed them and if I had a female it's a big responsabilty. I just totally agree with you!! I mean thank God to all the breeder's who know how to go about it the right way. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have our BABIES. But I prefer to leave the "WORK" up to them and I think you are making the right decision!!!! Thank God for people like you that are not just all about the "MONEY"!!!

Well, the good thing is that you know it would be wrong to breed her and you aren't going to do it - WAY TO GO!

Do they even care that it's unethical and unresponsible?

You could show them all the rescued momma boxers in rescue (but most come into us in such sad shape we don't put the moms on the page for quite some time) We have three in rescue right now and the ones that had pups in February and March are finally on the page. Those poor girls had no business being bred and one whole litter had demodex.

You could show them the "How to tell if you are a a backyard breeder" page

Definitely will find some terrific info surfing the boxer rescue pages on why to spay

You're right though, you need to get her spayed ASAP as you have a lot to worry about if she comes into heat and gets pregnant young.

Stick to your beliefs, you're right!
