Bkidd- I completely understand what you are going through. I brough my eight month old Brinks to the vet yesterday and he was diagnosed with Red Mange. I came home to search this site for information and found this thread. Thanks to everyone for all the advice. Does anyone have any other daily vitamins they would recommend? I have not yet decided what specific treatment to give him, but I do want to start right away in helping him in any natural way I can. Thanks everyone- Bkidd keep us updated.

Bongo had mange in his youth, and we had very good luck with Goodwinol ointment. Some of the mange treatments seemed to sting -- Bongo also got some secondary infections on his chin and muzzle and he HATED dealing with the treatments for that. We used supplements to boost his immune system, including something called (I think) Immugen that we added to his food. He eats Solid Gold, and we add the seameal with every meal because 1) he loves it and 2) it has done wondrous things for his coat.

Bongo lost hair around his eyes, on the top of his head, on his chin, and on one shoulder. He was not itchy. Everything grew back, and he is the picture of health now at 18.5 months! We were treating the mange from about 4 months to 8 months, I think . . . it's all a blur now!

Good luck, and don't worry -- it WILL get better!

update on GAGE

Might need to start a new thread...but for anyone reading. It's been 2 weeks since his diagnosis. Thankfully since we caught it on the starting line it's been fairly easy to control. No bleeding skin, stinking, or infections so far. Thanks to USIboxer and Beanieh. Sorry to hear of so many helpless pups having to deal with this stuff tho. We're switching him over to Proplan Purina...the vet a petsmart suggested it over everything else. Since I couldn't find some of the quality kibble suggested on BW I had no choice but to go with it. Any pros/cons? Anyway, thankfully GAGE seems to be doing just fine and everything is under control. Thanks for all the concern!

Bosco's Mom

I am still dealing with Bosco's demodex (red mange). About a week after I got him I noticed bumps developing around his eyes, so I took him to the vet and was told it was puppy strangles. So they put him on steriods. Well we were at the vet pretty much every to every other week because these bumps would start to go away and then come back worse. They just told me that it was a "stubborn" case of puppy strangles. Well finally one of my friends who does a lot of fostering looked at him and she thought it was demodex and told me to get a second opinion. The next day I went to a different vet, who before he even said what he thought it was took a skin scraping. Needless to say it was demodex. So the steriods he'd been taking which made him very lazy and fat, made the demodex way worse (because steriods weakens their immune system). So we immediatly started weaning him off the steriods and dipping with Amitraz. He had a bad reaction swelled up literally like a ballon, lot all his hair and was covered in these green pus zit like things. It was awful!! So then we had to give him benadryll and asprin. After the second dip he did the same thing. So I told the vet that I couldn't put that stuff on his skin anymore and he needed to find a alternate solution. Thats when Bosco got put on Ivermectin. He was on that for a while, plus bathing everyday to every other day with Pyroben. He also got Vitamin E everyday and antibiotic. Then we went back to dipping because the vet thought in be quicker. So now he is almost a year old and still getting dipped, but doesn't swell up or anything anymore. He has all his hair back except for some around his nose and mouth because of scaring. He is doing very well and should be done soon. We went through a lot but he is my baby and I would do anything for him. So it does get better and I know exactly how you feel. I wish I had know about this website 8mo. ago. Good luck and make sure they do skin scrappings to know for sure.

My heart breaks for you and Bosco. It's my worst fear that that would happen to GAGE. Do everything in your power to help boost his immune system!!! Even consider fresh fruits/veggies for added nutrition. Read around and you'll find lots of helpful info like fortunately have. So much gooood luck with poor little Bosco. And we'll say a special prayer for you too...I have a little idea of what you're going thru as far as worrying. (((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))

I'm ssoooo glad Gage is doing better! I have used Pro Plan for years, and I really liked it, their coats where always beautiful and they had plenty of energy! I would still be using it!
But a couple of years ago I had to switch to california natural....(a new pup had allergies) so I just switched everyone to it.

Ivomec

For Demodec Mange, IVOMEC is the fastest thing and easiest to use. The only reason vets will talk you out of using is is becasue:
1: FDA approval on K-9's is still pending.
2: It's alot cheaper and faster than the alternatives. (less visits shampoos/dips etc.)

I am not saying that there will never be any adverse reactions, however any reactions are completely reversable and will not cause long term harm if the drug is discontinued if clinical signes or bloodwork indicate any issues.

You have a grater chance of liver disease by using Rimadyl!

Just thought I would share with you the research I have conducted and the findings.

I have access to hundreds in veterinary specialists, so if you have any other concerns or questions please let me know!

The easiest is certainly not always the best, that is true in this case. With ivermectin and dips you are treating the symptoms not the cause.
This thread list some of the known side effects of ivermectin and has some good links also

Identifying the source is very important, and goes without saying. You wouldn't want to treat any disorder/disease without addressing what caused it. For my Boxers it was pond water, any still or stagnet "funky" water causes my dogs to break out and on ocassion, we end up with demodec!
That is when I did the research on Ivomec. I do understand that symptoms or "side effects" can be caused by this drug.... also any drug! So I would suggest when your animals are on any medication most importantly on long term meds to have blood work done often, and watch for any abnormal clinical signs! This will help exploit any issues with the meds and also provide valuable history in the event of any future problems.
