Hi Boxer Buddies,
My nine wk old puppy, Kendal decided to make a huge mess of her crate today while I was away. I babysit everyday from 8 to 1 and I put her in her crate. I just got her Saturday so this is the first time she's been crated during the day. She pooped ALL over her crate and got it all over her blanket, and she WHINES LIKE CRAZY. I did take her out before I put her in her crate and watched her "go", but she still made a huge mess! I've never had this problem with a puppy before. Her crate is a little too big for her at the moment (it's a medium/large sized crate) but I don't know if this would have anything to do with it. What do I do? Please help!

At nine weeks old IMO, 5 hours is way to long for her to hold her bladder/poop. Maybe someone could stop by and let her out every couple of hours before you got home to relieve herself. As far as the whining, you mean whining while being crated? Toby was never crated unless it was nap time or bedtime and we had two crates, one in family room one in bedroom so he could always be near us. And too at nine weeks old, they are entering a whole new home with a whole new family so a little whining is expected. Patience and a lot of love and you will get there. Good luck :)

Oh, cause my father's been home on vacation for the past couple of days and I've been away at babysitting, and he's been letting her out religiously so she doesn't use the washroom in the house, but he doesn't crate her (she roams around the upstairs of the house, minus the bedrooms by herself) and she's fine. He said she goes and curls up on her blanket and goes to sleep. I'm thinking maybe she won't need crated at all during the day, maybe just a small section of our front hall blocked off by a baby gate, just until she's old enough to hold her pee/poop for longer periods of time. Good idea or no?

If you keep your puppy blocked off in hallway I would still keep the crate in that area too with the door kept open so that she can still go in and out of it on her own to nap, but don't know if I would give her free rein of the house at any age lol! Boxers can be very destuctive when left alone. Good luck :) I also keep my tv or radio on at all times too to keep Toby company when I do have to leave.

Alrighty! I'll try that! Because if I put her in her crate, even just for a second during the day, she LOSES it, and according to my father, she will not stop. She hates her crate. I've been working on her to get her to go in by herself but as soon as she goes in, she comes right back out. My dad's currently on vacation so he leaves her to roam the upstairs and takes her out every hour or so, but he said she's really good. My biggest concern is when he goes back to work because no one will be here from 7:30 to 1... But I'll try the hallway with her crate and some music, and see how she does. If she knows I'm home and she's in her crate and/or blocked off from me, she hates it, and will whine... But she sleeps fine in it at night, so I really don't understand, lol.

If the crate is too large, that will defintely contribute to her pottying in it. Maybe get a divider or put a box in the back half. She should just have enough room to stand up and turn around. If there is too much room she will soon start soiling one part since she is able to escape the area and sleep in another. Good luck :)
