Help! Broken Leg!!!

Hi all,

Well, I took Daisy to the vet this morning. She had been favoring her left front leg since Thursday and I knew something was wrong (even though everyone else said she just "sprained something"). Well, they took X-rays of the leg and yep - it's broken. :(

I feel so bad. I'm glad I didn't listen to everyone else and decided to take her to the vet.

Here's my question: The cast is going to be on for a minimum of 4 weeks. The vet wants me to crate her this whole time except to be on a leash to go potty and eat. Being Boxer owners, you all know that crating a 6 month old for at least a month is going to drive us all insane!!! smashicon I feel so bad - she hates being cooped up as it is.

So, have any of your girls/guys had a broken leg?? How did you cope for those 4-6 weeks? Any ways you know of to keep her comfortable/sane? She is such a live wire that this next month is going to be hell for her. Please give me ideas on what I can do for her!!!

Thanks - I look forward to hearing from you!

I know it will be hard to crate her but Lilly and I survived it......just! ;)

The future outcome of her leg will depend greatly on how it is cared for now.
In that I mean she will have not only a better union in the bone she will hopefully be less prone to arthritis of the leg and be able to move correctly.
Correct movement in any dog is vitally important to the well being of the rest of the body.
If a dog favours an old injury that never quite mended it can throw out the entire frame and this can cause a multitude of problems later on.
In saying this dogs are extremely adaptable and even those who have lost entire limbs can go onto live great lives.
Daisy is being given the chance at 100% recovery if you can hold up the after care at your end.
I gave Lilly never ending new toys, treats and lots and lots of cuddles.
I never gave into her screaming and it took months of crating for Lilly to mend. :(
That endless screaming to get out, get her own way, run with the other boxers!!!!! :(
I had her in a jumbo crate that I could squeeze into with her and we spent many hours just snuggling and talking.
Lilly was the same age and a hyperactive nutso puppy, but we both survived it.
It did change her personality at that time and I was so worried for her but she bounced back once she found "freedom"
It was a tough time and very emotional but I am glad I followed my vets advice to the letter.
Believe it or not 2 years later she not only has no arthritis she is in the show ring and winning!!!!
Shes still a sassy rascal and leaps around like a thing demented!
It was worth all the tears and tantrums. :)
I know you two will survive and Daisy will be good as new! :)

Thanks so much for the kind words and advice. We crate her about 90% of the day - the other times she lies with us on the couch and watches T.V. She's actually been very receptive of the whole thing - it's almost like she knows she hurt herself and we are doing this to help her - not punish her. How smart those stinkers are!!! Thanks again - I'll keep ya posted as to our recovery time!!! :)

crating due to back injury

Your posts were encouraging. My 5 year old is being crated as of yesterday due to a back injury and he is heartbroken since he's never been crated before. I give him bones, etc but so far he just whines. I let him out to snuggle with me and potty, etc. This is going to be a difficult month but I know I have to stay strong for his sake. Right now he is just so confused.
