Balboa ate two tealight candles (metal container and all). Should he be okay until I can get him to the vet in the morning. Someone told me that a dog's stomach acid would disolve metal. Is that true?

I doubt that their stomach acid can break down metal...But hopefully it won't even pass the stomach and go into the intestines. My girl has swallowed various things (plastic & whatnot) that have come back up (sometimes even many days later). It seems like her stomach tried to break it down and when it could not it comes back up. Hopefully you will have that same luck.

Thanks for your reply. It's been about three hours now and he doesn't seem to be in any stress or pain. He's sleeping soundly. I'm going to hold off from taking him to the emergency vet and just get him to his regular vet first thing in the morning. I have a feeling there's not going to be much sleep for me tonight. If he does have problems, I can have him at the emergency vet in thirty minutes.

OH the joys of having a silly dog !!! I also doubt that stomach acid could break down metal . I hope he is ok. Keep us posted.

Talked to the emergency vet last night and called his regular vet this morning. They both seem to think he will be okay. Both told me to just watch him. If he starts vomiting or tries to have a bowel movement and has problem or if his stomach seems sensitive then there may be a blockage. He had a bowel movement this morning before he ate, but there was not wax or metal in it. No blood either. He ate fine and is drinking. He's acting normal so its just a wait and see right now.

Do you think he chewed up the metal or swallowed it whole? My friend was staying with me a few years ago and her Bernese Mnt Dog found a beer can someone had chucked into my yard and ate almost the whole thing! He chewed it up though and it passed through over the next few days. How that dog swallowed chewed up beer can I'll never know! She took him to the vet and they did an x-ray that she said "looked like Christmas lights" all the metal bits scattered along his intestine. The vet told her to buy some canned food to 'cushion' the metal so we fed him an entire case of canned food over the weekend. He was a pooping fool. The vet when he heard just laughed. He didn't mean for us to do THAT!

Hopefully your boy will be fine!

HAHAHAHA! Oh my gosh that was hilarious!!!!!!!!! About a week ago I wake up to Tyson heaving. He wasn't throwing up....just heaving. It totally freaked me out, so I grab him out of my bed and bring him to the living room where there is the nearest hard surface floor, and he ends up throwing up a wooden baby doll the size of a thumb. We didn't even know he had ate it!! So my assumption would be he will get it out one end or the other! I'm sure that was scary, I'd probably woulda freaked out....keep us updated!

We had a black miniature poodle that ate a coke can. We had no idea she had eaten it until I took her for her walk and when she pooed she passed pieces of metal and I could tell it was a coke can. She passed it and no problems at all.

Well, Balboa finally threw up about 1/2 of one of the containers. Still got 1 1/2 to go. Been checking his stools everytime he goes and he hasn't passed anything but candle wax that way. I really thought each container would come up/out somewhat whole. He's never been much of a chewer, He swallows everything with the least amount of chewing possible.

He doesn't act like he feels bad, so I'm just waiting it out. We have a fenced yard, but I'm still going out with him each time so I can check his stool. Also feeling his stomach alot to see if he seems bloated. None of that. Also checking his gums for any grayness. So far gums are staying a rosy pink. Vet didn't tell me to check his gums, but my thinking was any jagged metal could tear something coming back up or out.

The things these babies put us thru. Wouldn't trade him for the world, but am ready for this little crisis to be over.

Thanks for all your support. I'll let you know as things progress.
