Our little girl will be outside with us for hours (we have another dog and two young children). The problem we are having is that after she comes inside, she then will pee on the floor. It is driving me crazy!! She is young, yet, 11 weeks, but it just happened again a few minutes ago. I let her out by herself and I saw her go into the grass. She was outside for about 15-20 minutes and then came to the door to come in. I let her in, she went over by her crate and peed. What should I do? Let her back out after she pees? We have to keep a constant watch over her. I put her in her crate so that I could get on the computer for a few minutes to ask advice. Pooping hasn't seemed to be a problem, but she has done it a few times. We've had her for 3 weeks. Is this just something that happens or are we doing something wrong?

Be patient 11 weeks is pretty young. She should be fully trained by the time she is 6 months. She will probably catch on before that. Don't get in a hurry cause she is going to have accidents. I have heard of pups being outside and the minute the come in they pee. She's just a baby. Hope things work out for you in the near future.
By the way (neighbor) can you tell me where in Iowa your from?

Now I'm no expert, but I have read a lot that experts have written on training puppies. I've learned that if you just put your puppy outside, she may not know what you want from her. Try taking her outside to a spot where you want her to potty. (This will allow her to develop a "toilet" in the yard and help cut down on doggy poo all over the yard) Stay with her until she eliminates. It may take a few minutes but she will eventually do it. When she finally does, tell her, "good girl," and take her back inside. Like I said, I'm no expert but I was having the same problem with my 10 week old until I read about the subject on a web site that I found. Now he does great... still has accidents occasionally but never right after he comes in.

I hope my input helps you out and good luck!cool2icon

Good call Little Rocky Cole.

Another thing is when you realize the moment before you pup is gonna go, tell him to (Go Potty), just make sure your timing is right in advance before saying it. This way the pup will associate Go Potty or what words you use, with the act and when you do take the pup out for relief, you give the command and the pup will have learned what to do.

Watch the body language...

One thing that's worked with my puppy Riley is watching his body language. When he has to piddle (that's what we call it :D ), you can tell because he just paces around sniffing the floors. When he has to poo, you can tell because he has to about 4 or 5 circles before he's all set to go. Whenever I see him doing one of these I immediately jump up from whatever it is that I'm doing and ask if he has to potty. While he's going, I always tell him what a good boy he is and he gets a snack when we come in.

Basically, just be patient with your baby. I know it's seems like it's never going to end, but it will. Just watch her body language so you'll be able to start working on it. Good luck!!!

Everyone has given great advice :) You must go with your puppy outside and show them a potty place. Consistintly take them to the same spot and say "potty" or whatever you use. While they are pottying say 'good boy/girl potty' and have loads of treats ready for them. Also because your puppy is so young he/she should not have full range of the house and they should always be with you at your side. If you are in the kitchen then so is the pup, this is to prevent further accidents in the house. Remember when a puppy pottys in the house it is because we weren't watching them ;)

All great advice, definately go outside with your pup as soon as she potty's treat treat treat YEAH Greatest puppie in the world....then bring her back in....

Play time outside and Potty time outside should be completely separate....

So if you want to take the kids and the dogs outside to hang out for a bit, take your puppy outside to go to the bathroom first, bring her in then take out to play....

Basically I differentiate it for Trudy by saying "Go do your business" and when we're going to play i simply ask her if she wants to "Go out and play".....

It sounds like your puppy is not really sure exactly what the outside is for, to her it's just an extension of the house, especially if you go out with the kids and the other dogs and everyone is just hanging out and playing...

You need to associate outside with Potty first......then she can play...

I've noticed that my dogs won't go to the bathroom upon returning home from somewhere. It's annoying to us people, but the routine here is in the front door and out the back door to potty. To them, the back door signals potty time the front is for walks/rides.
