Zoe, 4 and an 1/2, ate too much people food on a recent trip canoeing - steak, bacon and eggs. All my fault. Vomiting for a day, took to vet. Thought was gastric obstruction, full blown surgery, only to determine it was caused by my giving her the left overs on the canoe trip. Once amylase/lipase number came down, she had VERY high liver enzyme levels supposed to be 40 - hers was 4000. Vet extremely worried. On IV fluids and electrolytes since Wed, no food. Don't know when she can come home from the hospital. Anyone familiar with liver issues after a bout of pancreatitis? Could it be from the anesthesia? She was good today, then they let me sit with her for a while, she shivered with every breath after starting her IV again, but her fever is normal.. Any experiences with this?

Both the lipase and the amylase tests are for liver values. If she had the bout with the pancreatitis one would expect these numbers to be elevated. What other test are you referring to which concerns the liver? Pancreatitis can be acute (a one time only issue) but can take months to correct or it can be chronic in which it will last forever but is managable with diet. Alot of times test results can be elevated due to stress. If all other tests are ok and Zoe acts as if she is feeling ok I would ask if she can be taken home to a more subdued environment and be taken back for retests. Is she drinking on her own? Has the vomiting stopped?

Thank you for your message... Amylase supposedly elevated if have pancreatitis, which she did have an acute case, her ALT (hepatic enzymes) were astronomically high at 4000. Came back today at 1900 - normal is 40. After a week of fluids, was able to come home. She is in my bed, under the covers due to a loud thuderstorm. I think she weathered it. She looks great, is a little weak, but is eating Hill's WD - only calories in a week! NO PEOPLE FOOD EVER AGAIN! I almost killed her thinking I was giving her a treat. I hope I have not injured her permanently. My other boxer, Darby, lived to be 12 after recurrent bouts of spinal meningitis due to neurological distemper.

Fruits and veggies are great for pancreatitis. The healthier the better. Foods high in fat are the culprits! (my hubby has pancreatitis and I also had a cat that sufferred). I feed my girl now lots of fruits and veggies, some of her favorites are green beans, bananas, apple slices, carrots, and similiar. Don't feel as if you have to keep your dog completly on dog food, if you want to share a strawberry with her this summer try it she might like it! I am glad that she is home and feeling better.
