Hello from New York...Boxer Lover

Hello,

my name is Jessica and my fiance and i (from New York) have just purchased our first boxer pup of our adult lives. Needless to say we are totally excited. Our pup's name is Tony and he is from Iowa. He is going to be flying in on January 23rd to come live with us for the rest of his life... He just turned 7 weeks old today... He is a plain fawn little boy with an all black mask and a little white on his chest and paws. He has natural ears and they are going to stay that way, as we are not ever going to show him. He is our new baby... If anyone has any good advice on how to prepare, what we will need for his homecoming, what we are in store for, and what to expect or just want to chat about boxers, or anything in general i am here...lovicon

Hi Jessica,

Welcome to Boxerworld. You are in for lots of fun and work (for the first few months at least). My advice is to have lots of paper towels for the potty training period. No rawhides, onions, chocolate, and grapes. Rawhides can cause obstructions in their stomach, the rest are toxic to dogs. Also when your pup has to go in for any kind of surgery (neutering) tell your vet no ace (some kind of anesthesia) because it's not good for boxers. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of stuff but these are the most important to me.

Enjoy him because they are the best kind of dogs. I have a 3 year old male named Ruby and a year and a half old female named Lily. Just curious, where in LI are you? I'm by Stony Brook and we go to the field at the university on weekends to let them run around. Have fun with Tony.

Hi,

Congratulations and welcome. You are in for quite an experience. Boxers are very intelligent, but can also be quite stubborn and independent. By independent, I mean they like to have things their way, not that they like to be alone.

You can get a lot of info by clicking on forums, then scroll down to the puppy section and you will find categories about housebreaking, crate training, obedience training, their needs and about everything else you will need to know.

They need plenty of exercise and plenty of toys. Lacking either they can do an amazing amount of damage if left to their own devices or unattended with the run of the house, or even a room for that matter. In time, with proper training (for both you and your pup) they can become trustworthy. They also need a lot of sleep. Boxers have PhD's in napping.

Electrical cords pose a major danger since Boxer pups like to acquaint themselves to anything that they can get in their mouths by chewing on it. Should they bite through the insulation, it can be fatal. Make sure he cannot get at any cords, tv, lamp, computer, appliances, etc.

No plastic that they can shred and swallow, since some Boxers seem to have Billy Goats in the lineage, they will eat anything they can swallow. Young Boxers are very ingenious at getting to things that you think are not accessible to them. The threads should cover that.

Get some books about Boxers. They are generally available at pet stores and book stores. Get at least two, (more if the budget will stand it) and read them thoroughly. Your pup will test your knowledge when he arrives.

Baby blankets or towels make nice bedding for a few weeks. They like to be covered for naps. You'll find several pictures in the galleries of pups sleeping with just their head sticking out from the covers. It's not unusual for a grown Boxer to sneak under the covers.

Have Nature's Miracle or similar product to neutralize accidents on your carpets.

Good luck, and have fun with your new baby. They grow quickly.

One more thing. It is almost mandatory to post pictures of your dog in the gallery.

Welcome to BoxerWorld! Be sure and get Tony a kong, they're very durable, and when you stuff them with peanut butter or yogurt, or other things, and freeze them, it occupies them for quite awhile. And as for the potty training, I had great success with puppy pads, although some may argue that. And lots of treats for training. You're in for lots of fun with your new pup! One other piece of advice: POST LOTS OF PICS FOR US!:D

Congrats on your new pup!!!! , you'll need lots and lots and lots of paper towels , a good crate will help with potty training, chew toys chew toys and more chew toys,unless ya want to find your new shoes or fav purse an unsuspecting victim of teething :eek: My husband and i bought our lil guy a bed to sleep on during the day, when he's not in our laps , an adjustable collar and leash are also must haves in my book. cause they grow fasttttttttt.
