Hello to everyone. We were boxer owners up until 1 month ago, when our dear Nala passed away. She was a fawn female, and only 4 yrs old. She stopped eating one day, and then less than a week later, we found blood in her urine. We took her to the vet, and then wound up being sent to a specialist. We had to leave her for testing and got a call an hour later to find out she had a hole in her intestine, so we Ok'd the emergency surgery, and she made it through and things were looking pretty good. 2 nights later she passed away from the toxins in her body, caused by the hole. We also found out later in the week that she had cancer in her liver, (they had to send the biopsy out for testing) which really upset us, because we wouldn't have put her through the stress and pain of the surgery if we had known about the cancer.
I have never had a dog that touched our hearts the way Nala did. (She was our first Boxer) She was really like a daughter to us, and we are taking her loss very hard. I stumbled on this board, searching the internet for info about the health of Boxers, and really enjoy reading all of the different stories and info.
We are talking about getting another one, but don't feel it is quite time yet. Maybe in 6 months to a year we will be ready. The only thing that worries me about the breed is the high rate of cancer. I would hate to have to go through this again with a dog that is so young and full of life. The only problem there is once you have a Boxer in the family, I couldn't imagine having any other breed, so I guess you have to live with the health risks.
I'm really sorry about the long, sad hello, but this is the reason I found and joined this board. We plan on using all of the knowledge on this board, in choosing our next family member.
