Boxer Pal
Hey everyone!

Stephanie and I went to our breeder yesterday and put a deposit on a beautiful flashy fawn boy. He will be 8 weeks old on August 2nd, and we will be picking him up Friday the 5th. Petsmart's stock may have risen a point or two after they rang up our sale yesterday, and we are so excited to bring Joey home! We've been doing our homework for the last few months and found a breeder that was about 2 1/2 hours away whom we really trusted. Mom and dad are boths Champs, and there are 20 champs in 4 generations. All health tests are great, and we were first on her list. Really a dream come true.
When we got there, we saw that her facility was beautiful. We noticed a few of her happy customers for her grooming service chit chatting away with her about Boxer stuff, and we could see the outstanding dedication she has to our breed.
When we first met the pups (we had our choice of a flashy brindle male, and a flashy fawn male.. the 2 male non-show prospects, as we wanted a male. Apparently our fawn boy's blaze is too white for her liking and she felt that it would distract from his head and be difficult for positive conformity judging), the brindle came charging towards us and licked away and jumped playfully for our amusement. The fawn came over, and said his hello's, then went off into his own little world, and played with his favorite toy, seemingly indifferent. It was hard for us to not immediately fall in love with the brindle boy, given the attention he was demanding from us, and willingness to play and prance on anything we could show him.
After he got used to our company and went off to explore everything else, we saw the curiousity and sly playfulness of the fawn. Slowly walking up 2 steps behind his brother, then pouncing on him... Pinned ya!! After playing with the pups for about 30 minutes, we definitely saw a real difference in the personalities of the two. The brindle boy played continually the whole time, jumping, licking, darting. We could hold him for about 20 seconds before he needed to play. I think he got the crazies twice in those 30 minutes in between the playing and kissing. The fawn confidently walked around, played with his toy alone, and let us pick him up and would cuddle and not fuss, and would look at his brother like, "you're crazy!!"
We were also lucky enough to meet the Sire and the Dam, as they were both there that day, the mom inside, and the dad outside... Mom was very sweet, calm, and asked first before she played and kissed us. Really a sweet loving mom. She looked very healthy and clean. We spent about 15 minutes with her, and then met with dad.
Dad came rushing into the room and acted exactly like the little brindle pup, jumping and licking us to death...but about 75 lbs. heavier... lol. He was also a real sweetheart, but he definitely wanted to see how much he could get away with, with us. He understands the command "NO KISSING!!", but it definitely took 3-4 hard commands before he listened to us... would stop for about 30 seconds, then go at it again. The breeder knew this dog very well, and 1 or 2 "no kissing's" from her did the trick... but he was definitely a handful.
So after all was said and done, and papers were reviewed, Stephanie and I talked about it for a while and decided on the calmer, gentler flashy fawn male. It actually was a tough decision, because we wanted a dog with a fantastic fun, playful personality, but we didn't want a dog that we felt would be too much for us to handle down the road. We both have strong personalities, and are fully capable of assuming the alpha role in our relationship with our dog, but we felt that he may be just a little over the top. On the other hand, the flashy fawn was so cute, cuddly, but didn't display really all that much interest in playing, jumping, running.... only in small bursts at a time. The breeder said that they played pretty hard before we came, and the little guy might be tired, but that his temperament was right in the middle of the litter. Definitley not the most dominating, but definitely not the most submissive. Overall, we just want a pup that we can handle, have a wonderful relationship with, but also have the energetic, clowning, playful nature that is what Boxers are. We felt that because of good breeding, this fawn pup will have the temperment that is standard for boxers, but maybe toned down a notch on the dial. We are so excited to be with our new pup, and hope we made the right decision. Thanks for listening everyone! And hello again !!!

You know, just like skin babies, our fur babies grow at THEIR own rate, too. Perhaps YOUR puppy was just tired when you saw him, or perhaps his playfulness will become more apparent as he ages.
But rest assured, he will exhibit the same traits as the OTHER, more lively pups and dogs you saw. They all have their own rate, and they all have their own times to show their Boxer heritage!
If you own a Boxer, you will not escape! :) Can't wait to talk to you about eight months from now! ;)
