Im not sure if this is the right place for this but HELP!
Now little Memphis has turned into a bit of a heater hog and when I say heater hog I mean he sits no less than 10cm away and will not budge. Now it is winter here but its not snowing and this little man is GLUED to the floor right in the hot air flow ( we have tried to aim it up so its just flowing right over him ).
We are used to Dakoda being a hot dog but this is getting out of control. He has even started to go and sit in front of the heater when its not on and look at you like 'Hey what's going on? Turn my heat on'
Tonight we were going out to my inlaws and he would not come he just sat there like 'You guys go, Im just gona sit here in my heat'

So Im wondering is this bad for him? It cant be good for his skin, I mean he is quite toasty when you pick him up, Im worried he's cooking himself! Do we move him or wait til he's medium-well? Any advice would be great

"medium well"....oh my gosh!! That is too funny!! Hey, bring on the steak sauce! Maybe that will make him think twice about getting toasty by the heater! LOL What a silly, silly boy!!!!

I think that is perfectly normal. Boxers seem to love the heat and lying in the sun. He will move away if he gets too hot. :)

Our Brandy is the same - she loves to be warm - we only have the a/c for heating and she loves when its on as well as lying in the sun to bake and loves being totally under covers/blankets etc but she does move when she gets too warm - i think its normal and it

I'm amazed how on the hottest day both of my want to lie out on the deck in full sun. Makes me melt just looking at them :)

I think it depends on the individual ;) I had a boxer that did exactly what you describe - and I used to force her to sit further back (if only so the rest of us could get some heat LOL). Henri, on the other hand, would be most comfortable living in Siberia. Even in the winter, he'll be found lying as near as possible to the doors in the hope of catching some draught (and can't last 15 minutes in full sun in France).

As for how you manage it - I'd say just keep a good eye out, and if he appears distressed (breathing etc) by the heat; make him move. If not, just be guided by your own need for a share of the heat ;)

Indy did the same thing when he was a pup. Would constantly rearrange himself for maximum heat from the heating vent. But the next winter...not so much. I wonder if maybe it was because the first winter he was younger and much smaller, maybe he got chilled easier.

Who knows why they do what they do? Probably just do it to keep us entertained and make us ask each other silly questions. wackicon

I would ask my vet to check out his thyroid. Seeking out heat and feeling cold is one of the classic symptoms.

It could dry his skin out causing him to itch- which a lotion or such would be in order. But other than that I think he'll move if he gets too hot. Hes a summer dog :)

Thanks everyone for your replies, we really were concerned about him toasting himself to a crisp! I do hope that he grows out of it, he's tiny now but when he gets BIG as GMac said there's going to a fight for the heat!
Glad to know he's not doing too much damage.
