Heartworm prevention Medicine, suggestions?

I recently put my 11 week old puppy on heartworm medicine.... Does anyone have any suggestions on a medicine that they have had good luck with, maybe one that works for hook worms and round worms also? I have heard of some adverse reactions to heartworm meds and thought that it might be best to see what works for other boxer owners. I appreciate any suggestions!

I have always used Heartgard and seems to works fine here. There is also Revolution and I think it for both heartworm and fleas, don't know much about this one at all.

I use Interceptor, which is for heart worms, round worms, and other types of worms. It's a chewable, flavored tab that is given once a month.

Just curious, if your dog is on this medicine, can they still get types of worms?

i use heartguard and deuce loves it!!!!

The sentinel and revolution kills heartworms and fleas ... BUT... (there is always a but isnt there?) it acts like flea birth control. It requires fleas bite the dog. When they bite they draw some of the dogs blood and the poision from the pill makes the fleas sterile so they cant reproduce.

1, because the fleas have to bite the dog to be killed... this does not stop them from being carried in and falling onto your floor, and it means the poor dog still has to deal w/ the itching from the bug bite.


and 2, I do not like that poison being in the bloodstream. I woudl rather it was topical like frontline.

Tae is on Interceptor and she's been on it since she was old enough to receive heartworm medication. She did get a tapeworm this past spring, so I suppose Interceptor does not prevent tapeworms. Obviously it prevents heartworms, but I'm not sure about other types.

my guy is on intercepter only cause for some reason he doesn't like the chewable heartguard. both protect from other worm besides heart worm, interceptor protects against more, but neither protect from tapeworm, which dogs can get from ingesting fleas, so if you use a flea product you'll be able to reduce your chances of your dog getting tapes

Interceptor here as well, we got our boy at 5 1/2 months from the breeder and that is what he used. I trust Ramos' breeder tremendously and continued with the Interceptor. Mike

My babies are on Iver heart right now cause the vet was out of Heartgaurd. When we started taking them to the vet he gave us a free sample of every kind to try and see what worked best. Word of caution ... I have read the MSDS sheet on all the major Hw and flea products- I would not recommend Revolution. In dogs it treats hw and fleas(no intestional worms). The caution says it may cause... Um I don't know how they worded it but fetal leakage? :eek: and they were talking about humans. I just freaked and didn't need to read anymore. that is all i needed to read. I use advantix and heartgaurd normally. We live in a very flea/tick/mosquito infested state. We keep the babies on these year round.

We use Heartguard Plus, which has a worming agent in for intestinal worms as well. I know that all the heartworm meds are preventative, but someone told me it's still possible for them to maybe get some kind of worm. I guess it's kind of like the flu shot--it protects them, but if they do get something, it's not as bad as it would be if they weren't protected at all. Not sure about that, though...I also use Frontline Plus for fleas, ticks, etc. My vet gave us both Heartguard Plus and Frontline Plus, and I've used them forever. I'm too afraid to rock the boat at this point!
