Heartworm Medicine

I am curious as to what heartworm medication you use for your dogs. At present both of mine are on Revolution and it works for everything it says it does, ticks, fleas, earmites, and heartworm. My vet reccommended it but for two LARGE dogs the cost is prohibitive! For my dog's size, a six month prescription is almost 80 dollars per dog. I want them protected against heartworm but am just wondering if any of the other heartworm meds work as well as Revolution. Am interested in other's experiences. Thanks

I will not use Revolution. It has not been out long enough. I know alot of people are using it.

The Revolution (if I remember right), doesn't take care of any intestional parasites, which the Heartguard Plus or Interceptor will.

I use Frontline Spray for fleas/ticks. I have too many to use the vials on.

Where do you get the frontline spray? I used heartguard plus and love it. I have had no problems with it! It too is expensive, I think they all are but it is much better than the alternative I have to agree

I have been using Heartguard Plus. My new vet here in Okla. recommends a product called "Interceptor," which she says also kills pin worms, which the other products don't. She said pin worms are often hard to detect so it is better to prevent them from the outset.

I have a supply of Heartguard for this year but plan on switching, on the advice of my vet, to the Interceptor for next season.

We used Heartguard Plus with JEB (that was what our vet in Kentucky recommended) and kept him on that when we moved to Alabama. Davis was started on Interceptor at his breeders and so we have continued to use that with him. He likes the tablets, and so far we haven't had any adverse reactions.

By the way, has anyone seen the commercial for some new heartworm preventative that is an injection that lasts for 6 months? I can't remember the name, but there is a boxer in the commercial. Just wondering if anyone had tried it yet?????

We use interceptor for heartworm and frontline for fleas. Im with Aimee-where did you get the frontline spray?

I just switched Bingo from the daily Filaribits ( I know, I 'm kinda old school!) to the monthly Heartguard Plus. I'm quite happy with it, considering Bingo was getting pretty fussy about taking his daily tablets. I was worried about all that medicine at once and about freaked when I saw the size of the pill i needed to give him, but he was maybe low for one day, if that, then was fine with it. I was REALLY happy to not have any side effects from it and it sure is easier to give once a day. THe only thing I don't like is that they can actually GET heartworm but it just in a sense kills them when you give them the tablet.....i guess it's just a mind thing you know? I too was wondering about the new shots that last 6 months and I'm sure with time that will be the new thing. Seems like a good idea but I've heard from a vet that is on the local tv station at noon that it's better to wait a while and see how it goes, than go right to it because it is so new....what do you all think about that? ....p.s. i think that boxer on the ad for it is sooo cute!!!!!

There have been 3 Boxers in my area that have had severe adverse reactions to the ProHeart shot - even if I recommended heartworms preventive I wouldn't recommend that one!!

Anything from vomiting/shaking to seizuring. (The seizuring one may have died, but I am not sure about that - they weren't my dogs, obviously!)
