Ordering online
I would be careful about ordering heartworm medication online. For heartguard you do not need a prescription but in the US you should need one for any of the others (i.e. Inceptor, etc.). They reason why I caution you is because a year or two ago a few companies we being investigated for selling expired and foreign (non-FDA approved) heartworm medication. I personally use medi-vet for my frontline prescriptions but still buy my heartworm from the vet. Either way any medication you buy make sure it is approved for sale in the US. The box should tell you.

You want to know that the dogs is negative and if not the severity of the heartworm before treating it. Different medication can be used to treat heartworm. I work for a rescue and we only treat with interceptor if the infestation is not great. If the dog has a bad case we use a Immiticide. You also want to know because many complications can arise during the treatment. Especially if the heartworm has moved into the lungs. As with any hearworm treatment you need to limit the dogs activity level so you don't stress the heart. Hope that answers your questions.
