Boxer Pal
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to hear some thoughts about loss of hearing in senior boxers. My Mandy ( almost 10yrs) is recovering from an eye ulceration and has been through alot this past month. i have noticed that she does not come when called to go outside anymore or she comes part of the way and just stands at the top of the steps and will not come down. She just looks at me. The only thing she seems to respond to with very keen hearing is her trear jar rattling. When does the hearing seem to decline?? her energy has also seemed to decline more and she lays alone in another room alot. Feel a little worried. Any comments would be appreciated.:(

Renee, how wonderful that you've had your baby for 10 years. What does your vet have to say about the aging? I would assume that dog's are like human's and when the years start adding up the hearing, taste and a little of the energy go.

I wouldn't worry to much but you may have to make compensations for the losses. Best of luck. I pray I have my Maddie for that long and longer.:)

Hi Renee,
I don't have a lot of advice or anything for you, but I just wanted to let you know that our Goliath will be 12 in November and about a year or so ago, we noticed he was not hearing as well as before, so I think that is pretty common due to their age. Also Mandy could be starting to get a touch of arthritis which would account for her slowing down too. Goliath recently started chiropractic adjustments (now don't laugh!!) and arthritis supplements as he had developed arthritis and his knees were pretty sore and swollen. I am happy to report that something is making him feel better...he is no longer in bed at 8pm...but rather is still outside at that time playing with our Jack. He gets up so much easier when lying down and is coming up the back steps faster too! He had even lost a few pounds from being more active! So maybe Mandy is just feeling a little stiff and sore like he was. There are so many things that can help arthritis these days...you might check with your vet and see if he can suggest something to perk her back up a little! Give her a hug for me...I have a real soft spot for the "seniors"! Good Luck, Deb K

My first boxer when I was a kid seemed to stop hearing when she got older, but we think it was just her being stubborn and deciding she was old enough to do what she wanted. If she felt like doing what we asked, she would, and if not, she would come when she was good and ready. :D Just a thought -- does she hav any problems walking? Maybe that's why she stops at the top of the stairs. My Sally started losing use of back legs in th e last year and she wouldn't do steps in the end -- she could get around the house ok, but if she wanted to go up or down, she would stand at the foot or top of the stairs and wait for someone to carry her. Maybe it's time for a check up just to see what you might be able to do to make her feel better. Enjoy this time with your special girl -- I think the senior years are the very best boxer years. I hope you still have lots of years with her ahead of you!

Maybe she's just not feeling well. Hope she's okay and I wish her a speedy recovery.
The only thing I notice with Lacey (8yrs) is I have to step over her more these days. She doesn't think she has to get up and out of the way....lol
