I will be the 1st to admit...I have no clue how to train my dog!When me & BF were together...he swore he could train him....but in my eyes...it wasn't training...and we argued about it regularly...so he just stopped his "training".Now, Herkie knows how to sit....especially if you have something he wants....but any other time...
!Actually...with just me & the boys now....it's not a problem.Both Herkie & Kuma are good dogs inside with me....but Herkie....when he encounters people or other dogs, it's another story!He does come when called....I can take him out off leash and we play...and I never have a problem with him coming back.I can also walk him off leash....but I don't do this...as I never know when someone may come out another condo....or pull up in a car.
But if someone comes over....he loses his mind...jumping up...head high...jumping all over the furniture...etc.And if I take him to Petsmart...he pulls like crazy...and will jump up on anyone who wants to pet him!I can get him to sit...but only for a second...back into wiggle jump mode!And I think I may be on the right track...when my Mom came to visit...I had him crated when she arrived....so he could adjust to her being in the house, when I brought him out, I leashed him immediately and we went outside, when we came back in, I unleashed him....and he NEVER once jumped up on the couch with her...or jumped on her....so I know he can do it
I am trying to encourage my friends when they come over...to ignore him completely, no looking, no speaking ...nothing.But they are being uncooperative...so it's making things harder on me...because we don't encounter a LOT of people.They are like..."this is just Herkie...let him be himself"!...But I want to be able to take him places...and he not exhaust himself from jumping and just being overly excited from seeing new people and dogs!He never jumps up on me...so when it's just me...I can't teach him not to jump.I have been reading & doing searches on here for hours and have read a lot of info that I am going to try...especially the stepping on the leash when we meet people out in our complex.There are many kids here who want to pet him...but he can't hold his sit but for so long because he's sooo happy to see them.So...very often when we see the kids...I try to avoid them because I don't want him to jump on them....but now I am anxious to try the leash method to see how it works...I know he can succeed...but I am not so sure about me!
What I am really trying to get around to...Herkie is 4 yrs old....can he still be trained effectively?Is it too late?I can't use treats when I train him...as he can't swallow....he loves toys....can they be used effectively?I am interested in putting him into an obedience class/training class....but I don't know how well he would pay attention with other dogs around!
And Kuma the Siberian is soooo Herkie's opposite(inside the house) he will sit...lay....whatever.He is just such a different boy than Herkie....they are such opposites.I just want Herkie to be a trained boy....he loves people so much....and if we can learn how to interact with other people better...I would feel better about letting him see more people and greet them...I know that would just thrill him!I want the "Dog Whisperer" to come to my house!Any suggestions/thoughts anyone has on training a 4yr old would be appreciated!
