Is there a way to train your dog so he will tell me when he needs to go out? Also, has anyone ever heard of a special gland in a dogs rectum that needs to be release by placing two finger up there and putting pressure on it???? A lady told me that it helps with gassy problems..

That is called an anal gland and if everything is normal when the dog has a bowel movement it naturally gets expressed and cleaned out as the stool passes it. Sometimes it gets blocked and needs to get manually expressed which is best done by the vet (unless you know how and can stand the major stink). Occasionly the dog will express it at other times and you will notice a major stink a little bit of brown fluid and them licking themselves to clean it up. Not something you need to address routinely. Has nothing to do with a gassy problem.

A daily tablespoon of PLAIN yogurt (with live culture) can help with the stink of the "Dreaded Gases". :)

Bell training is one method used to teach them to tell you when they need to go out.

Thankyou so much for your info. I will buy some yogurt after work. May I ask what bell training is and how you do it?

Our boys are bell trained. We have a huge bell hanging on our patio door low enough for them to reach it. When we would take them out to potty we took their paw and hit the bell several times and would tell them "potty, outside, potty, outside". They picked it up pretty quick too, only about a week or two. We did take them out every couple hours at first when we were training cause we didn't want to wait for them to have an accident to ring the bells. When they need to potty now they give that bell a good wack to make sure I heard it and then come and find me to make sure I am getting up. And if I don't right away they will stand at the door hitting the bell. And you can say for them to potty however you choose, we just thought those were the two simpliest words to use at first. Now I can just ask them when they ring the bells "do you need to go outside and use the bathroom?" and they understand.

Bell training is just as it sounds. You have a bell next to the door, everytime you bring the dog out you take his paw and hit the bell. They will begin to associate the bell with needing to go outside. The only draw back is some dogs figure out that ringing the bell will get them outside and start ringing it all the time just to go outside and play.

My two don't either, I put in a dog door it works great if you have a fenced back yard, if not I've heard many people say the bell's work great :), hang them on the door where your baby goes out show and tell them what it's for believe me they pick it up real fast  good luck on the training

bells

I live in an apt, so I don't have a doggie door, but I have had a little set of bells hanging on a string off my door knob b4 my puppy came home.I have showed her that when she wants to go out...this is what is required to let me know.

If you show them something young enough and let them know this is how things are done around here...these dogs are so smart, sooner or later they will be ringing that bell.

** Don't forget though, once they know that this method gets them outside, you will start to hear these bells going off more frequent...walks etc. lol.

** Bells have worked fine for sydney mae and myself **
