He loves to jump

Everytime I come home or someones over to visit it seems like douglas has to jump up on them and say Hi. What i have been doing recently is as soon as i walk into the house i have him sit down before i greet him. It last for about 2 sec. then he's back to jumpin up on me. Does anyone have any idea's on what i can do to get him to stop jumping.

In obedience class they told us to use a squirt bottle and squirt the dog with water when it was doing a behavior you didn't like. Haven't actually tried it but I know from others in our classes that it does work.

dougy dog's dad, Hello!! I am the mommy of a beautiful male boxer named Mugsey. I am married with two children and we also have the same problem with Mugsey and his jumping!! One day when I was in PetsMart, the obedience trainer told me to turn my back to him and ignore him everytime he jumps. By doing this we are ignoring him and he can't stand it!! When he gets down we praise him!!! We have trouble getting our two children to do this so it is a little hard to enforce with Mugsey. However, whenever my Husband and I do turn our backs, he does get down. You may try it. Who knows, it just may work!! Good luck!!! Mugsey's mommy

Ok, we are very bad parents.

We don't really have much of a problem with the dogs jumping on people in public, and we don't have children, so.....

When we come home, Striker and Nellie are SO very happy, and jump very high in the air, wagging their nubs. Must admit, we run and jump right along with them, having a great time.

I guess we are encouraging it!

I have the same problem with Minka. She can't control herself when people come over. She jumps and jumps and snorts and kidney beans all over the place until eventually she calms down. I'm trying to get her to sit and stay when people come in but it is a slow process since her obedience skills virtually disappear when you add some distractions!

i don't have problem with Avra cause when she was a puppy,i or the quests when came at home close my eyes to her for a little(yes that is hard),await for a little and after she calms down i peted her very gently.
Now i continue the same way with command "sit"and "stay".

i think you must be a little harder with her until she calms down,and you will see conclusion very soon

Oh, am I so glad to hear that Oscar is not the only CRAZY dog out there. He is so bad when out in public or when people come over. We often wonder if he will ever settle down. We have tried the water bottle and that doesn't work...he loves it! We have tried turning our backs at him and he thinks it's a game. We have tried to make him sit, hold his collar, the whole nine yards, he just flings his body around, lays on his back and sqirms and kicks until we let go. He is NUTS! He has gotten better with us coming home because he knows he will get no attention until he settles down and sits. We have tried this with our guests and it doesn't work. He just gets so excited that he can't control himself. If anyone finds anything that works, please let me know. We have had to result to putting him in his crate when others come over. I'm afraid he going to hurt someone.

You know, the ironic thing is, when my little sisters come over, aged 6 & 8, (yes they are much younger than me), he gets hyper for awhile but then settles right down. He doesn't jump on them either. It's like he knows that they are small and doesn't want to hurt him. It's weird!

Actually , it sounds like you are trying two of the most successful ways I've heard of. The ignoring method worked for us combined with the 'sit' and 'off' commands; no sit, no greeting. Jake got walked on past if he didnt sit after being asked a couple of times. He followed us into the kitchen, bedroom where ever and we would stop and just kept saying sit and acting very unemotional towards him until we go the response we wanted. We also talked very soft and happily when he did sit so as not to get him excited again. (Yea right!!!)

Now he does get excited when we come home and wiggles and kidney beans around (JUST LOVE IT!) but he quickly sits (still just a wiggling that cute behind!) to get his "hands-on mommy-daddy smooch on the head greetings".

Jake took almost 2 months to finally stop jumping; and we had neighbors and each other work with us ALOT.

Dont give up!!!! You're doing the right thing but I think this is one of the most difficult things to teach these guys because they are so happy to have their family and its one of the things we love about this breed.

With the 'off' command to stop the jumping on us, we did use our knee in his chest if he jumped on us and said "off" but one needs to be VERY careful using this so as not to hurt the animal. Timing is everything and NOT brute force; ask your trainer about it; they might have another suggestion. I stress the jumping "on" us becasue Jake leaps and bounds "around" us and I dont mind that as long as it doenst get too close. There is a happy medium in there. GOOD LUCK!!!

I have been following this thread because I have the same problem. I was hoping someone had an answer that was just out of the ordinary enough to work.

Ignoring Megan doesn't work, she still jumps. And the downfall to that is everyone who the dog comes in contact with has to ignore her while she is jumping. Not sure about anyone else but, I have a hard time getting people to not pet Megan when she is jumping.

step on toes

My friend and I were talking to Tucker's breeder yesterday afternoon and my friend asked her about the jumping up on everyone and how to correct it. The breeder told us to lightly step on their back toes when they've jumped up on you. I'm not sure if it works or not, we still have 11 more days until Tucker comes home, but I guess it's worth a try if nothing else does the job!!
