Harry loves to eat sticks. We have an off-leash park where he can run and play with his friends. Sometimes, when he's not distracted by his friends, he loves to chew sticks! We tell him to drop it and he does quite frequently but sure enough, there are nights when at 4:00 in the morning he is throwing up sticks! Or, he gets diarhea.
We don't usually feed him before he goes to the park because he plays so vigourously with his friends.
But I don't know if he is eating sticks because he is hungry, is missing something in his diet, or just because he is a dog...
Any ideas?

My guess would be he eats them because he's a dog. Chance and Maddie both love to chew on sticks and rocks. If I see them chewing on them I usually will take it away, Maddie has vomited up pieces of sticks before in the middle of the night. Chance will even dig roots out of the ground:eek:

You just hafta be really careful he doesn't become obstructed by them or tear somthing on the way up......or out!!!!!

Dogs will be dogs! :)

Yep, I have a stick chewer as well. Maggie hasn't met a stick she didn't want to eat. I think she prefers them to bones.

I swear some day I'm gonna look down at her while she's doing her poopie and see a National Forrest come out !! :D :D :D

Murray loves to chew sticks, too. As a matter of fact, almost every time he's out in the yard he tries to sneak back in the house with a stick sticking out of his mouth!:)

Samantha loves sticks, but she loves pine bark mulch better! I'm an avid gardener, so my garden is covered with this stuff. When she was a puppy, she would bring the mulch indoors to snack on. She doesn't do it as much anymore now that she's a mature *baby* of 4 yrs.:D

Yep, Beau likes to chew on sticks too.
We don't have too many trees there, but any stick that falls, he finds and starts to chew on! I wasn't sure if I should let him or not, but he doesn't usually chew on it too long. Something else usually gets his attention, like the cows we have behind the fence of the backyard. It's hilarous to watch him try to jump up and see them, sometimes they are grazing 2 feet from him and the only thing seperating them is the 4 ft. wooden fence. He goes crazy barking at them, it's so funny:p !

My Harley loves sticks also. He also loves to chew on branches of bushes...any bush will do. I even seen him jumping up at the peach tree trying to reach a branch that he decided he wanted!

My husband enjoys chopping wood and Leroy enjoys helping him. If there is a no suitable peice of wood, my husband would throw these logs down the hill. And Leroy would fetch them and eat them. We had to limit Leroy time outside while Dad was chopping wood because he pooed wood and I got really worried. Our neighbors make fun of us because all of the tree branches and limbs we try to toss and hide in the woods ALWAYS make it out into our front lawn. It always looks as though a tough storm just past through our yard. :)

As long as he isn't eating it - Leroy is allowed to fetch and play with sticks. Do be careful of obstructions and tears - monitor the pups stool to make sure there is no blood. :(
