He eats poop!

Hey everyone.

Ok...I hear that it's normal for dogs to munch on a little poop every now and then, but Artie looks forward to it. When we let him out he runs out and eats poop. Today someone said that their dog used to eat poop. They said that when their dog did, they "swatted" it's butt and said "NO" with a firm voice. Then put toothpast on its teeth and their dog hated it. Now, they say that their dog never eats poop.

Before I do anything like this. Please let me know if this is normal (the eating poop part) and if not, please give me suggestions on how to stop this. I'm feeding him 3 times per day with a 1 cup scoop (he's 16-17 pounds and the puppy food suggests this amount)

One good way to stop it is to keep the poop picked up. I am not trying to be rude but that is the only way I have found to stop Maxwell. He too would eat the poop.

I don't really think it is a good idea to ever hit a dog. Aggression just begets aggression. Just my opinion.

Rogue has just started to eat her own poop, so I'm on to it now, but I can't stop her when I'm not in & she does it in the crate!!

All the same I would not smack her or put toothpaste in her mouth - I just don't like that idea. :(

Just pick it up when you can. What else can you do?

There is another thread on this just posted recently that you may want to check out. Some suggested the dog is eating poop for the extra protein. Some also suggested something that I cant remember right now, to add to the dogs food and when they poop, they wont want to eat it.

I just pick it up as soon as they go. I go out with them anyway, so might as well. At least I dont have to spend my whole weekend out w/ pooper scooper searching the yard

Thanks for all of your replies. The poop Artie is eating isn't his. My neighbor has 4 outside cats that love my yard and Artie seems to be eating their poop. The Vet said that it might be the food that the cats eat. Sometimes they eat food with fish flavor and so forth.

Geez. What can you do? Fun Fun Fun

My boxer Duke loves cat poop.. My mom and dad are staying with us for a few months and they brought their cats too. Now Duke loves the cats to death and now I guess I know why.... The litter box is in the guest bathroom and my mom always keeps it cleaned out all the time but its like Duke knows exactly when one of them goes to the bathroom. He will jump on the door and push it open and go right in there and have a little snack. I think it is so gross and I shoo him out of there but he goes back every time. My moms cats are inside cats and have never been outside before so we couldnt put the cats out side. Any suggestions?

i have the litter box in one of the bathrooms and have a safety gate in the door way so the pups can't get in.

my dog eats his own poop and our other dogs poop! He has a darn right out feast every time we let him out! It's discusting and we try to keep it picked up but he still manages to find some!
