neuter

I was hoping to get my 11 month old neutered. I had an appointment to take him in until I informed my wife that I was doing it and I had to cancel. We have been going at it weather to neuter, I say yes and she says no. I dont have any plans to breed or show. I have given my wife all the reason for it but she is agianst it. All her other dogs she has had in her life have never been fixed. So she sees no reason not to fix Duke. Even after all the reason for it. My question is has anyone ever been in this situation and how should I handle it?

Any un-neutered male or any male that was neutered "late" or closer to a year and not the usual 6 months that I have known was more sexually aware than the ones that were neutered at six months. By this I mean displaying some of the behaviors that intact males do, which by the way are anything but undesireable to people, such as mounting objects and people (sometimes to the point of ejaculation- eeew!!!) and marking areas with urine (the living room, the car tire, the front deck, etc.) schipperj25, tell your wife of these things and hopefully she'll be making the appointment ASAP. Once the behaviors have started, it's a whole new battle to curb them. It's sooo much better for you and the dog to just remain as happy as you are now.

I'd make the appointment, tell your wife that you're dropping him off for grooming - and get the job done. It's not like they can be put back I'd rather have my sig other mad at me for a lil bit than have an intact pet!

I think the problem for people who are against neutering is that they take it from a persons perspective. As in: if it were me getting fixed then I would feel this way rather than how the dog would feel. I think dogs minds are alot more simple than ours and its not going to ruin there lives if they get fixed.

My parents' waited until their dalmation was 3 before they neutered him. Mom wanted to do it all along and Dad (and all 4 of my brothers were against it). He ended up roaming, etc. and Mom had enough. So when they went out of town and she took him to the kennel (which is at their vets), she had them neuter him while they were gone. :D However, he still likes to roam whenever he gets the chance - which is not often, but he has almost been hit by a car before. It's kind of sneaky, so I don't know if I would really suggest this route.

Our 3 year old boxer rescue we got about 6 weeks ago was neutered the week before we got him. And talk about the marking problem!!! :rolleyes: He's only just gotten to the point where he feels comfortable - it's been about a week since he's marked in the house!

I would try my best to have it done as soon as possible. Intact dogs, while not aggressive themselves, can be the target of other male dogs' aggression. And then there are all the health issues mentioned above, along with the roaming, etc.

So did you get him neutered? Did you and your wife come to an understanding that it is in the dog's best interest?

Well this is what I have learned from this site and others and books and 3 vets.Waiting to get them neuterd does increase the muscle size,The testostirone contributes to muscle growth,but it also increases growths to cancer cells and tumers that may not be noticable also.I was wanting my Boxer to get as Big as a horse,But he is family,So neutering is going to happen.I talked to the vet about size.Well just because testosterone wont be present just basic good strong daily activities will add size,just like pumping iron at the gym.Good diet and exersize is going to be my way of getting him Big.(also heard that they get bigger afterwards too)People talk about traits of unneutered dogs(marking his area,humping,wondering to find females,Bla,Bla),My only reason I would ever get it done is because of females going into heat and my dog SDS-my way of saying Sudden DEAF syndrome.But learning of the high possabilities of Boxers getting cancer in several places and Tumors,Is why I am going to do it.I know it won't prevent them If the man up stairs decides different,But it sure increases the odds of him NOT getting it.
I just hope it does not take the spunk out of him or make him passsive.He is so friendly as it is.But will not back down from a dog,Of course he has yet to get that close to one,But he sure acts like he would eat'em up,Who knows he might just play with them,Just like when the door bell rings he barks kinda mean,Until they enter and I talk to them and then it is all good with him.or take him to the store and he thinks he has to greet everyone he meets,It is funny he will talk them right over to him,Mouns and growns and kinda growels and yelps at them to get there attention.
I personely hopes he gets a little more leary of people and becomes more protective of his family(exspecialy for my wife she would like to start walking at night after dinner).Right now if he goes to the store and I run in and my wife stays in the car and I say watch'em protect mommy he reacts to anyones movement VERY aggressivly,Only thing is he stands over top of her doing it and it makes her mad when I say it,I get a kick out of it myself-LOL.Or if he hears a noise outside at night he stands over us and acts all mean and then will run and stand over our son in bed and growels-Then smells under both sides of the bed and then comes back to bed ,Like you mess with this little dude you come threw me first.I just hope that stays intacked after the neutering.
Well this is my 2 cents worth thanks for listening and I can relate with people not wanting to neuter but just way it all out for this breed of dog and you will do the right thing-Neuter !!Just my opinion.

Murphy had the snip

Our Boxer Murphy is 8 months old and he had the snip last thursday, we were worried all day whilst he was at the vets, he was fine and when we went to collect him he wagged his tail which tells me I had made the right decision. The only funny part of the day was seeing Murph with what can only be described as a lampshade on his head.

I just adopted a boxer that proves early neuter doesn't inhibit muscle size one bit. He is guessed at age 2-3 and is one big hunk of boxer. He has a huge chest, with muscled shoulders and hindquarters. You can see that he was neutered very early.
And I am sooo glad! He is great with all dogs, no aggression, no marking, Mr. Easy-going. And we love him! And he really turns heads. He is built almost just like my male who was neutered at 3-4 when he came into rescue. And yes, he still knows how to be a top rate mommy protecting machine. No one gets up to the house without a few serious warnings and once they are welcomed in he is a lovely greeter. (Well, I think he is perfect, hence the reason he is now my third in the house.) And I was so happy that he was neutered early, cause if I had the chance to raise him that's what I would have done.
I say do what's best for the guy's health. He will grow into a beauty!
