having a baby

I think Boxer Rescue is a great thing but I would be concerned with a newborn baby. We actually looked into a rescue (we have a 10 month old) for our second boxer, but were warned of the risks of not knowing what the rescue has been through. I was very disappointed, as I wanted to save a boxer but I had to think of what is best for the family.

Most rescues will not adopt to familys with infants or very small children. Magoo was a rescue but we got him before I knew I was pregnant and it all turned out wonderfully. We know have a 5 month old baby and would like to get another boxer next year but are finding that most rescues do not adopt to family with small children.
Maybe Magoo was just an outstanding brother form the begining but we really didn't have any issues at all with him and the new baby. We didn't even bring the blanket him because DH forgot. He did have plenty of time to get used to the toys and new baby thigns being around the house. One thing is that when we brought the baby home DH took Magoo out to the beach that afternoon and played with him and wore him out bascially but he got to spend some one on one time with Dad that he doesn't usually get.
My best advice is if you have training issues with your pup, barking etc. Work on them now before the baby gets here, do not wait until you plate is too full!

my Andie was the best with Caitlin who was a little premie. She would sit next to her and watch over her. I never worried about her hurting the baby. I would do the baby blanket thing. Also pay a little extra attention to your fur-baby.........Congratulations on your new addition!!!

Congratulations! We have a 19 month old baby girl (Gracie) and Max (our two year old furbaby) is amazing. I always made Max a part of our routine. If it was time to change her, feed her etc., I always made Max come with us. I would talk to him and the baby about what I was doing. He eventually anticipated our routine. As well, I made some special Max and me time and when my husband came home from work, I would take the dog out for a walk. This gave us sometime alone together and it was a nice break for me to get out of the house and chat with adults! Just love both your babies and they'll both do great! Congratulations again! Denise

Personally, I haven't met a boxer yet that didn't adore children. We have 3 older children, our youngest was 1yr when we brought Maggie home at 7wks of age. Babies are a whole different ballgame and I wasn't sure myself how Maggie would deal with our new arrival this past July. Oddly our baby became her baby very quickly. She has adored him from day one. Now that food is falling from the highchair she adores him even more. She never thinks he's clean enough. She even hovers over the tub during bathtime and as soon as I get him out she has to inspect him. When he's playing on the floor she lays just on the edge of his quilt and curls her paws back so that her nails are away from him. This blew me away. She is amazing. I don't think I have even one picture of my son that she's not in hovering over him. She is awesome.
Make sure that you make time for your boxer child even while you're tending to your little one. I found that I can hold a baby in one hand and play fetch with the other. Now that my son is 7 mos old he loves to watch and try to get in on this game.
