Have you seen Neutering done this way?

We just had our foster pup, Katahdin neutered by the rescue Vet yesterday and was surprised when he came home with all his boy parts. He still has his testes?!

Is this something new? Or is it the difference between neutering and fixing? (I never knew there to be a difference)!

Although though we like that it's a small incision where he was "snipped" we're concerned that this didn't lessen the chance for testicular cancer in the future?

Any ideas?

It takes a few days for the "swelling" to go down. My last foster, it took about a week before he was significantly smaller, then about 3 weeks before he looked like a neutered male. Of course he kept getting to the stitches which prolonged his swelling (and my exasperation! ) Give it a couple of days, if the swelling doesnt appear to be going down, call your rescue contact cause the dog may need to go to vet for a check!
Boys!! ;)

Thats funny, I thought the same thing!!!! I work for the SA rescue and when I saw my first 'freshly' neutered male, he still had grapes too..... sure enough, a week later no more grapes, duh smashicon :) I was really confused at first, I was thinking, are you sure he got neutered today??? Hilarious!!!

He is quite swollen, but I know he's still intact. The assistant made a comment about "isn't it great that they get to keep all their parts now?!"

My sister's puppy was neutered yesterday (different state/vet) and his are GONE!

I'm just surprised. Maybe this is how this particular rescue organization has it done to save money? I've heard great things about the Vet and they work hard to find all the animals good homes and make sure they're cared but I know they have NO budget. Most animals aren't neutered until they've found a permanant home, but I requested it to foster and it was done at no cost to me.

It is very common for vets to remove the contents and leave the sacks, for lack of better terminology. In younger dogs the swelling will go down in about 10 days and the sacks will draw up after a couple months. In older dogs the sacks may be permanent.

Unless he was given a Neutersol injection, you dog no longer has all of his parts. He has the sacks, but the testes are removed. Neutersol is still being tested, and as far as I know it is not being practiced by any vets that I know of. But I think it's an injection that is supposed to stop the production of sperm/testosterone.

Thank you so much for the very educated information. I think you might have cleared this up for anyone who didn't know what was going on

They can do vasectomies on dogs; I'm not sure it would be less expensive than a standard neuter, though.

I believe that I would have to talk to the vet to find out what procedure was done. Perhaps that's the only way you will know for sure.

I'm having the same issue here!

Sonny was 'fixed' on the 10th by the rescue vet and he still has a little sac there. Upon closer examination it feels as if his boy bits are still inside but when I had him to my vet she said it felt like it was done properly.

When I had Andy done his were totally and completely gone and he had a fairly long set of stitches. Sonny only has 3 stitches.

I would say it was a doggy-vascetomy they did!
