have a cat hating dog

Is there any way to get a dog that wants to eat my cat for lunch to learn that the cat is family too and that it is not a side dish? I don't expect them to be best friends I just want them to be able to coexist in the same household is this possible? My boxer is 3 years old and my cat is 6 months old. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Most of us who have dealt with this have given the cat(s) a space of their own that is gated off so the dog can't get in. I used baby gates, other people have cut holes in doors, or blocked doors so they can't be opened far enough for the dog to get through. Work on the "leave it" command so if your dog starts to go after the cat you can stop him/her (and reward the dog for stopping!). It probably took 5-6 months for Danny to be reasonably well controlled around one cat that has learned not to run and he still struggles with the other cat that does run from him.

The problem is that a cat is a small animal - Alot of dogs LOOOOVVVEEE to hunt and kill small animals, sometimes you can't break them of this - and sometimes you have a dog that loves cats.

If the dog has a high prey drive, than the future is probably not so good for the cat.

Provide a safe haven for your cat. While doing so remember that the cat is part of the family and should not be expected to gain that safety away from the family. We have a tree house in our family room. It is high enough that the cat can get away from the dog if she wants to while still being with us.
We got our girls, (dog & cat) 6 days apart from each other and they are 2 weeks apart in age. They grew up together and get along. They don't cuddle but they do play and get along well.
I still have to remind Cami that she is not allowed to chase the cat....I also remind the cat that she can't chase Cami since turn around is fair play.
Teach leave-it, no chase, be nice or similar. Be patient and persistent.

Hi,

I had, sad to say had, a cat named Casper. Casper was 6 yrs old when I got Josie. Needless to say Casper was not happy. The way I dealt with it was to treat them the same. No difference at all. I have a pic checked in under my user name with Casper and Josie. They just learned to get along as neither was treated as a "favorite". As long as I payed == attention to both they got along fine. Sorta miss Casper....Josie does too.

I have 2 male cats, Alf and Milo (11 months old) they both hated Ruby when she 1st came as a pup, she is now 6 months old and what a change! Alf actually rolls around on the floor while Ruby licks his ears! He entwines himself around Rubys legs! I couldn't believe it! Milo is more reserved but is getting there. Alf has taken to the pups too, probably because he's gotten used to Ruby and no longer sees her as a threat

3 years later Boone finally tolerates the cats (who were here first) and we are still working on Rocky. It's only been 3 months so I have a ways to go yet. My cats fight back (no front claws..but they don't know that) and then it turns into a game for Rocky. I'm hoping that eventually they too will learn to live in harmony together.
I have a 2nd floor where the kids' bedrooms are so the cats are gated up there and can come and go as they please. When they feel threatened by the Dogs they just jump the gate and sit on the other side out of Rocky's reach and just watch him. When he does corner one I used to say "leave it"....that just didn't seem to be working well so now I say "No Kitties". That is working better.
Good Luck it just takes time and A LOT of patience.

Cat's OK

DaisyDuke was about 2 years old when we brought a cat into our home,
And much to our surprise DaisyDuke was not impressed at all!

It took atleast a month before DaisyDuke stopped trying to eat the cat,and over time they have become friends. They do play together now and even take turns cleaning each other... yeah that rights Daisy will lick the cat until she is absolutely soaking (yucky) and the cat returns the favour by licking DaisyDukes jowels.

We brought home Barkley after having a cat for about about 4 years. The cat (Oscar) was not pleased. Barkley is always after him but he seems to be interested in nothing more than a playmate... Oscar is not amused by this.

So we put in a cat door and he has a small room to himself about the size of a walk-in closet with a cozy little bed and all in there. The thing is, he NEVER comes out. He was never social with us before so he doesn't seem to mind. It's not just Barkley, he hates everyone.

The door to Oscar's room is the route to Barkley's backyard so they have to see eachother all the time, so I'm slowly trying to socialize them by sitting with them both at short intervals. The hissing and swatting is less frequent these days so I'm a bit optimistic...

I hope things get better here we have them seperated in different parts of the house all the time I just would really like them to just co exist I could care less if they liked each other or not I just want them to tolerate each other with out having to keep them seperated all the time.
