Provide a safe haven for your cat. While doing so remember that the cat is part of the family and should not be expected to gain that safety away from the family. We have a tree house in our family room. It is high enough that the cat can get away from the dog if she wants to while still being with us.
We got our girls, (dog & cat) 6 days apart from each other and they are 2 weeks apart in age. They grew up together and get along. They don't cuddle but they do play and get along well.
I still have to remind Cami that she is not allowed to chase the cat....I also remind the cat that she can't chase Cami since turn around is fair play.
Teach leave-it, no chase, be nice or similar. Be patient and persistent.
