I noticed this on Xena while she was playing in the yard about 20 minutes ago; it wasn't there when I got home from work 2 hours ago and seems to be growing by the minute.
I gave her 25mg Benadryl 10 minutes ago.
She's 9½ months old and 60 lbs.

Stating the obvious - but it *looks* like the site of a bee sting or some sort of insect or spider bite to me. Does it seem to be bothering her?

The Benadryl should help - but I'd just keep an eye on it and if it doesn't go down in a few hours or if it gets much worse, I'd get a vet to check it out.

Thank you for the reply :)
She doesn't seem to notice it. I poked it and massaged it but she didn't seem bothered.
I'm thinking she may have laid down on an insect on the lawn?

No real advice... Watch it carefully to see if the Benadryl helps. I would say a bite or sting also. I hope Xena feels better soon!

Update

It's been 2 hours since her Benadryl dose and the swelling is almost gone :)
I'm still interested in people's opinions though so I may be able to prevent this in the future.
If she finally caught a bee, I hope she learned her lesson :(

Well, magie gets this too!

My Maggie plays really hard and often when she plays in the grass alot she either breaks out in tiny measle like bumps or sometimes I have notice a single large bump such as Xena'a. I just think Maggie's skin is highly sensitive and the large bumps are mosquita bites because they dissapear by the next morning.smashicon

Looks like a bug bite to me - I've seen similar on Fritzi occasionally and I give the Benedryl also. Fritzi has a bad habit of snapping at flying insects trying to eat them so I monitor her summer time outdoors...

Samson got into ants one time. He had bumps all over him. We took him to the vet. She gave him Benedryl. Probably a bite.

Layla was laying in the grass and something like this happened.. It was one of those red ants that had bit her and if you have ever been bite by one of those you know how it hurts, I called the vet and he said benedryl or (same thing for us baking soda and wated to make a paste) You have to make sure she doesnt lick it that was the hard part.. And we did a little ice too to make it feel all better.. The swelling went down after about 2 1/2 hrs.
