Has anyone been around a Boerboel?

Well, the Boerboels that Adam has are no way like Boxers. Sometimes I would take Pearl out and he would bring the male, Mercury out and they would play but the Boerboel doesn't have as much stamina for lots of roughhousing. They are not gregarious like Boxers, more aloof and hanging back. Pearl fairly bounces around and his dogs seem to lumber. I lilke a more playful personality, these seem more like guard dogs to me than clowns like our Boxers. As puppies they were silly but what puppy isn't? Adam has a very strong personality and his dogs hang on his every word, I think if you aren't experienced with Boerboels a commitment to extensive training would be key. Not trying to talk you out of it, this is just my impression of them.

From everything that I have read, professional training seems to be a must.Would it be a fair comparison to compare a Boerboel with a Rotty in terms of temperment and the need for a quality dog from a good breeder along with constant training? I have had several boxers (protective) and a mean old lab (very protective and not good around with Children , probally because of his bloodlines) so I understand the need for socialization and a quality breeder. Are they friendly dogs?

Boerboels are from the mastiff family, so you might want to look up some of the mastiff breeds to get a comparison of temperment.

I wouldn't say they were friendly. They are more reserved. The way Pearl interacts with strangers is totally different. The Boerboels take a minute to size you up whereas Pearl is very outward with her affections and loves up on anyone if given the opportunity. They seem to have more of a dignified nature than a Rott. When I think of Rottweilers I get this brutish image in my mind, almost pushy. I know that's not true for all as every dog's personality is different. Boerboels are more of a wait and see type of dog. Once Adam approves of a new person his dog's lighten up and are friendly, letting you pet them and give butt scratches. I'm sure you would like them, they just aren't Boxers in the way they intereact with people, no kidney beaning and the like.

I have been thinking about getting a second dog for a long time, although I love boxers, I have thought about getting a different breed. Some of the dogs that are still on the list are the following;


Boxer

Doberman Pincher

Rotty

Boerboel

The dog would most likely be a male, as I do have a female boxer (shes not even remotely an alpha), but I really would like to interact with these breeds before I buy one. Having a dog to me is a huge commitment and I really want to get the breed that is right for me. Anyone own or have experiances with these breeds?
