Has anyone been around a Boerboel?

I have been reading a lot about this breed on various Boerboel website and I think its a pretty interesting breed. Although its a rare breed there are well over 100 breeders in the states that breed this dog. From what I have read its the same size of a rottwieler/bullmastiff and has a even temperment if trained correctly.

Has anyone had any experiance with this breed? Even if you have seen one and spent 5 minutes with one, what are their personalitys like? Any information would be appricated. thanks!

I thought of you today!!! The DH and I were in Pet Smart getting treats for the fur-babes when in walks one of the cutest pups I've seen in a long time! Of course... we had to go up and ask about what it could be!!! It was a Boerboel!!! Her name was Cassie and she was so adorable and well behaved. The young couple had just gotten her three weeks ago... and I'm thinking she was already 40 lbs!!! They said that she was their first dog; and that she has been an angel so far and very easy to train!!! I asked about her parents... and they said that both were gorgeous dogs, very smart, and very mild tempered! They said that the breeder told them that they are very good with kids; but not with cats! They are great family dogs. Hope this helps!!!!

thanks for the insight about them, I am on the fence between one of them or getting another boxer. As for the couple, all of the breeder websites I have read state that the boerboel is not for an unexperianced dog owner, I hope everything works out for them.

AKA...South African Mastiff. They are HUGE! I think they get between 150-200 lbs. I did a bit of reading up on them not too long ago - they are still on the FSS listing with the AKC which means (from akc.org):
the AKC provides this service to allow these purebred breeds to continue to develop while providing them with the security of a reliable and reputable avenue to maintain their records. FSS® breeds are not eligible for AKC registration.

I was pleased to find a handful of Boerboel breeders doing things the right way. Instead of shows, the SABT holds "appraisals". The actual appraisal consists of observing the individual dog and measuring it as and individual against the breed standard. It does not look at the dog and compare it to the other dogs present, it compares the individual dog to the breed standard and says this is how this dog measures up as a Boerboel. Their health problems are pretty limited, testing for hip dysplasia is the only tests I could find that should be done, which is pretty good for a breed that began in the 1600's.

They certainly are cute pups - they kinda look like overgrown boxers.

We come from South Africa (well I lived there 20 years but my husband is South African). We had friends who had a boerboel and my husbands aunt and uncle have two of them on a farm. They also have about 6 cats and these 2 big galumphs are like babies around the cats. They are very protective of family and tend to be a wee bit aloof with strangers (kind of like the ridgebacks we had). They are beautiful dogs but there are those over here who don't care what they breed and some of the temperaments are not what they should be (some of them). I would have a boer boel in a heart beat.

Wow!! 200 pounds??!! The next time someone comments to me that Mackensie is a big dog, I'll mention this breed to them! 57lbs certainly sounds small compared to that!

I was very surprised to see this thread. I saw 2 Boerboels on TV a few weeks ago and fell in love. I looked them up online as soon as I got home. I'm not in the market for a new dog anytime soon but they will definitely be in the competition when I am!

A freind of mine, Adam, has three. He is a trainer so he knows the proper way of socializing and training large, protective breeds like Boerboels. He does get a lot of attention when out, lots of people ask questions. The male is very slobbery but his females aren't. They are gentle but I would never try to enter his yard without Adam around.

What is the personality of a Boerboel like? Are there major differences in males and females? I know this is a stretch but if you could compare a boerboel to a boxer.

I already have a female boxer and I am thinking about getting a second dog, really I am between getting another boxer or a Boerboel after doing some reading about them. My female is not an alpha and is very mellow so I wouldnt have problems with her accepting another dog.


The problem is that I have zero experiance (boerboels) with what I feel the most important part of any dog breed, the personality. So if you could describe it I would appricate it a lot. thanks
