My 5 mo old girl lost hair on the tip of one of her ears. I noticed a small bald spot (like real small, maybe two centimeters) on the tip of one of her ears (cropped). Tonight the bald area is a little bigger and the skin looks a bit irritated and it look like a teeny piece of skin is missing. She doesn't seem to be itching or bothered by it. Could it be an injury from playing outside with our Lab or should I take her to the vet? If it is some kind of mange I would want to catch it early. She just started puppy kindergarten 2 weeks ago and has been socializing with other pups, once a week (2 classes so far). She's been away from her mother for over a month so it can't be demodectic mange can it? She's eating high quality kibble (Royal Canins Natural Blend)and has a healthy soft glossy coat elsewhere. But the fact that it looks worse tonight than last night makes me a little concerned. Advice?

Our Thumper had a little irritated spot on the inside of her ear - it kept crusting over and got a little larger. I put an antiseptic cream on it and eventually it cleared up. I believe it was caused by an insect bite and/or from a nip from one of my other dogs. ~ Cathy

thanks

Thank you, I put some antibiotic cream on it tonight. It hasn't gotten worse since I posted so that is good. I also noticed a tiny scab at the tip, so I'm thinking maybe it is a play injury. Thanks for the reply!

It certainly could be demodectic mange. It's really got nothing to do with how long they have been away from their mother. It's really all do with their immune system. I would look at ways to boost your pups immune system. Hopefuly it's nothing, but it wouldn't hurt to have your vet do a skin scraping just to be sure.
